Indian, Turkish armies see eye to eye on vision for Asia

Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik, India's chairman of the chiefs of staff committee and chief of the air staff of the Indian Air Force, had talks at the General Staff on Tuesday.

Interaction between the Indian and Turkish militaries will eventually pave the way for better interaction between the peoples of India and Turkey, the top commander of India has stated, while drawing a highly optimistic picture in regards to the future of bilateral relations between his country and Turkey.

Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik, India's chairman of the chiefs of staff committee (CoSC) and chief of the air staff of the Indian Air Force, was here in Ankara on Monday and Tuesday for an official visit at the invitation of his counterpart, Chief of General Staff Gen. Işık Koşaner. Naik and Koşaner held talks at General Staff on Tuesday.

“I believe that interaction amongst countries must start innocuously, in a slow manner. We see from our experiences that military-to-military contact facilitates people-to-people, country-to-country contact without too many eyebrows being raised, without too many questions being asked. This is the best way to come closer,” Naik said in an exclusive interview with Today’s Zaman on Tuesday before his departure on Wednesday morning.

Describing Gen. Koşaner as “an excellent man, a very compassionate leader and a very mature person,” Naik said: “He and I share common views on the general geo-strategic situation, on various world issues, on problems specific to each country and we discussed a range of issues. And I found that there was an emergence of interest, he was very keen that Turkey and India come closer and I entirely agree with this.”

“Turkey has a strategic position as a land bridge from Europe to Asia, I think this is a thing of the past, it has no relevance today. It was relevant when man used to pass via land. Today, you have the sea, you have the air,” Naik said, when asked to comment on Turkey’s foreign policy view on Asia.

“Turkey’s view of Asia and Turkey’s view of Europe are two different things. Turkey, in my estimation, I mean, I may be wrong, has always been very keen on joining the European Union. At that time, Europe was powerful. Surely the balance of power has now shifted to Asia. Asia is the happening place with maximum economic growth, maximum useful population, maximum rule of trained manpower, maximum possibilities for emerging markets -- and also with maximum possibilities for defense buying, because Asia has not yet [become] as civilized as Europe. In Europe, they have crossed all the land borders; there are no more land borders.

In Asia, there are potential conflict situations, therefore, defense sales, sale of defense technology in Asia will always continue. So all these make Asia the happening place and Turkey is, rightly, now changing their focus to Asia. That’s my feeling,” Naik said.

Whenever there was a need to talk about bilateral relations between India and Turkey, a brief sentence mentioning their history of friendly relations but unmet potential for cooperation was enough. In the last few years, the frequency of senior-level contacts between the two distant countries become considerably greater, reflecting the presence of a mutual will to eventually meet that unmet potential for bilateral cooperation.

On the other hand, when it comes to Turkey’s relations with Pakistan, with which India has troubled relations, “special, brotherly, friendly and historically rooted” are the adjectives used to describe them. “It is tomorrow, when we talk of India, we talk of tomorrow and when we talk of Pakistan, it is yesterday and today,” Naik briefly responded when reminded of the differing descriptions of Turkey’s relations with India and Pakistan.

Countdown to Pakistani members saying... but they are our Muslim brothers!

Countdown to Pakistani members saying... but they are our Muslim brothers!

Let them say whatever or remain in illusion. If they can't live brotherly with Bengali Muslims in East Pakistan (Bangladesh), Baluch, Shia, Ahamadiaya etc. etc. Then how can they expect foreigners to treat them as brothers.

And you should not forget we are also brother to the Turkish people as far as India's huge Muslim population goes. So they can;'t ignore on that account too.

The military to military relationship is the next step in our friendship with turkey.

Turkish business leaders have signed deals worth $1 billion in India

Turkish business leaders have signed deals worth $1 billion during a recent trip to India but are capable of investing much more in the Subcontinental giant, according to Turkish State Minister Zafer Çağlayan.

Turkish businesspeople conducted nearly 250 meetings with 75 Indian firms during the Indian-Turkish Business Forum, Çağlayan said Thursday during a press meeting in New Delhi. Söğütsen Seramik in the ceramics business, constructors STFA and Alsim Alarko, as well as a Turkish wood company, made business deals for a total of $1 billion.

Nonetheless, there is room for improvement, the minister said. “India announced that it would invest $500 billion in construction. They will build thousands of kilometers of roads and railroads. We want the number of Turkish companies doing business here to rise. I can hardly understand why our contractors do not come to a market of $500 billion.”

The minister also accused Turkish construction companies of hesitating to do business in big economies. Claiming that Turkish exporters suffer a “big-nation-phobia,” the minister said, “We export $114 billion worth of goods to countries across the world but we are still timid and scared when it comes to the biggest importers or we act under a weird psychology.”

Still, following problems in the Middle East and North Africa, India has become an increasingly important destination for Turkish exports.

The reason the ministry has put a special focus on India primarily derives from the size of the country’s population, Çağlayan said, adding that a 1 percent growth in the economy would result in big development.

The Indian Transportation Ministry will invest $11 billion in building roads between 2011 and 2013. The investments in the field will continue for at least 10 years, reaching a total investment volume of $320 billion, said Çağlayan. “This is very important. They’re [allocating] $45 billion for roads, $62 billion for railroads, $8 billion for civil aviation and $10 billion for ports. The investments will continue increasing until 2018.”

Noting the ministry is continuing analysis on production similarities between the countries, Çağlayan said Turkey’s exports to India were in the mining, oil refining, chemistry, paper, cardboard, wood pulp, non-iron metal, machinery and electronic equipment sectors.

Dreams of Bollywood in Turkey

Çağlayan also said the ministry was working on a Bollywood-like movie set project in Turkey.

The minister said he had contacted executives at Bollywood, the giant movie production center in India, with a goal of building a similar structure in Turkey.

“We want to build movie sets in Turkey just like the ones in Bollywood and Hollywood. We will establish a free trade zone for it but of course the private sector will be involved,” he said. “We will provide support in taxes and social security. This is why we call it a free zone. More than 1,000 television programs, documentary series and movies were shot in Bollywood last year. There are over 400 TV channels here.”

The ministry wants to imitate it in a bid to attract producers from across the world, including the United States and the United Kingdom, Çağlayan said.

India, Turkey aim $5 bn trade by 2012

India and Turkey have set a trade target of $5 billion by 2012 and $10 billion in the next 10 years, an official statement said on Friday.

This followed a bilateral meeting in Turkey between the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia, and his Turkish counterpart Mr Nehat Ergun.

“Turkey presents the most compelling imperative for India to develop a strategic partnership in energy security, infrastructure development, automotives, and engineering industry fields,” Mr Scindia said in the statement.

The Minister added that, “there are immense possibilities for economic collaboration, joint projects and joint investments in our regions which are of common interest to both India and Turkey.”

GROWING TRADE

Trade between Turkey and India has grown at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of around 27 per cent and reached $3.14 billion in 2009-10 from $1.2 billion in 2005-06.

Mr Scindia inaugurated the ‘India Show' on Thursday evening in Istanbul. The show, being held from February 3-6, is organised by the Commerce and Industry Ministry and Engineering Export Promotion Council India and has exhibits from various sectors of Indian engineering showcasing India's engineering transformation.

Over 160 engineering companies participated in the India Show, including Tata Motors, Bajaj Precision, HMT International, Ramakrishna Forgings, Noida SEZ and Mahindra World City. Others included Science and Technology Department, Tourism Ministry, Coffee and Tea Boards. The Governments of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh were also represented.

STRONGER PRESENCE

Mr Scindia said, “India-Turkey strategic partnership has to be viewed from an overarching perspective that draws on strategic, political and economic consideration.”

“India is making concerted efforts to extend co-operation in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caspian Region. India and the European Union have established an institutionalised EU-India Strategic Partnership. Further, India and Turkey have set up a Joint Study Group to look at the feasibility of a bilateral Free Trade Agreement,” he said
