From an impressive fleet of 21 submarines in 80’s, Indian Navies Submarine fleet is currently down to 15 subs with four German-designed HDWs (SSKs) on the last leg of their operational life, Indian Submarine fleet could have hit rock bottom in next few years if Defence minister Manohar Parrikar had not intervened.

Reports are emerging in Indian media that French firm DCNS may get further orders to supply conventional submarines, Mumbai-based Mazagaon Dock Limited along with DCNS is already building six Scorpene submarines of which first lead ship INS Kalvari already has commenced its Sea Trials.

Reports indicate Mazagaon Dock Limited will get orders for 4 more Scorpene-class submarines to be built in Mumbai which will be equipped with DRDO developed Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which will enable the vessel to stay underwater for longer.

Another report also indicates that India and Russia are on verge of acquiring one more Akula class nuclear-powered submarine (SSN) on lease by end of this year and there is also media speculation that Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on his visit to Russia will discuss supply of 2 New Advance Kilo Submarines along with Upgradation of 4 Current Kilo submarines in fleet of Indian Navy .

Indian Government already has allowed Naval Design Bureau (NDB) to work on indigenous nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSN) which might become reality in a decade or so and currently is working with Navy to select Shipyards which can build Submarines selected under follow-up Submarine acquisition programme under Project-75I where Navy plans to acquire next generation Stealth Conventional submarines for which tender is yet to be floated .

The current regime has shown that it is making attempts to get back India’s underwater fleet back to its glorious days by taking out of the box measurements to meet operational requirements of Indian Navy.
