Indian Special Forces Contingent Deployed To Serve In Afghanistan
Wednesday June 27, 2007

NEW DELHI, June 27 (Online): India has sent a 75 men strong contingent of special Indo-Tibetan Border Police commandos to serve in Afghanistan where terrorist activities from Pakistan is seeing a marked rise for the past 18 months.

Earlier 'Press Trust Of India' had reported that at least 134 highly trained commandos would be dispatched in two batches. The first batch of 75, according to source, is said to have already left for Afghanistan. The second batch of around 50 commandos is expected to be sent in the first week of July 2007.

The troops will be deployed for protection of Indian Border Roads Organization personnel contracted for constructing crucial roadway links among major cities and regions in Afghanistan. This decision was taken by the Indian Govt. after it received an SOS from BRO engineers constructing the 218-km Zaranj-Delaram highway, a strategic road that will connect Kandahar to the Western regions of Afghanistan.

With the reinforcements, the total number of ITBP commandos in Afghanistan for protection of Indian workers will go up to 388 as 254 are already there for the task.
