read the history section..around that time(Qing dynasty),Tibet was not under their direct control,they China somehow didctate their policy and sometimes give protection.sometime China sent their own missions into Tibet...after 1912,Tibet got independence..

Guys (Indians) - please ! It wasn't as if INDIAN TROOPS UNDER INDIAN commanders went up there. These Indian soldiers were used by the Brits as part of their army and the discussion stops at that.

As for Qing Troops not in Tibet - you can clearly see (if any Indians here can read the Chinese script) .

Fattyacids has correctly pointed that part out . There is no dispute about the Chinese (Qing) not being there.

And besides, as an Indian I would like to ask fellow Indians and fellow posters - what are these pictures going to prove? Can we get Tibet ? No. Are we able to rustle up China's feathers and "free" Tibet? No.

These are historical relics (pictures) at best and an example of how the cunning , scheming Brits used subcontinental soldiers for their campaigns in far off lands - Afghanistan included.

No question of us Getting Tibet. Tibet was never part of India, but it was never Chinese either. Tibet was an independent kingdom and the Chinese simply exercise control in certain matters like foreign affairs - the way we do to Bhutan. The annexation of Tibet was a naked aggression against peace loving Tibet people who are far closer to India culturally than to the Chinese.

If the Chinese start getting obnoxious, India should do well to arm Tibetians and start an insurgency there. Despite extreme atrocities, the Chinese have not been able to erase the culture of Tibet till date.
