Bengaluru/Gurugram/Mumbai: Amid talk of Bharatiya Janata Party’s 'Operation Lotus', the gathbandhan crisis in Karnataka is set to deepen with a major breakthrough expected on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Karnataka Pragnavantha Janata Party’s R. Shankar, a legislator from Ranebennur Assembly segment in Haveri district, and H Nagesh, an Independent MLA from Mulbagal constituency in Kolar district, pulled out from the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S)-Congress coalition government in Karnataka.

The BJP had on Tuesday rejected the allegations levelled by the Congress that it is trying to topple the seven-month-old Karnataka government. In the 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly, the BJP has 104 members, Congress-79, JD-S 37, BSP, KPJP and Independent one each, besides the Speaker. The Bahujan Samaj Party, KPJP and an Independent were backing the coalition.

• Reports now suggest that eight, not 11, Congress legislators are likely to jump ship. Meanwhile, Karnataka Congress In-charge KC Venugopal said: "I'm in touch with all our MLAs. This drama is going to end in a day or a two. We are all together, there is no internal fight in Congress. This is all baseless."
• Times Now has reported that 11 Congress MLAs are likely to defect later today. Karnataka Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar had on Sunday claimed the party was aware of "what has transpired there (in Mumbai hotel where a few Congress MLAs are camping) and how much has been offered to them (by BJP)."
• Congress plans counter-strike, promises Cabinet posts to four BJP MLAs in order to lure them. Notably, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had on Tuesday alleged that some BJP MLAs are in his touch. The BJP has 104 MLAs in the 224-member Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
• Congress workers are protesting in front of the five-star ITC Grand Bharat resort in Haryana and raising ‘Modi Murdabad’ slogans. Some senior leaders are expected to join the protest.
• A major breakthrough is expected later in the day with some reports suggesting that if everything goes as per the BJP’s plan, the party will parade its MLAs before Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala. The BJP MLAs are currently staying in a hotel in Haryana’s Manesar as a precautionary measure.
• According to sources, five Karnataka Congress MLAs are set to defect today and the state intel is tracking these rebel MLAs. Meanwhile, there is huge security at the five-star resort in suburban Mumbai where two independent MLAs and reportedly a few Congress MLAs from Karnataka are staying. The Congress too suspects that some of its MLAs are currently in the Powai-based hotel, kept ‘in hiding’ by BJP leaders.
• Sources have told Times Now that the BJP MLAs have been asked to stay back for a few more days at the Gurguram hotel. The MLAs have reportedly been briefed that their stay could even last for a week.
• Former Karnataka CM BS Yeddyurappa will reportedly hold a meeting with the BJP MLAs in the hotel in Gurugram at 1 pm. As per the sources, more than 90 MLAs came to the resort located amid the Aravali Hills in Manesar on Monday evening. Around six MLAs joined them later.
• Talking to the media, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said he has not met anybody. “I request our media friends not to become fools…MLAs (Congress MLAs in Mumbai hotel) are unreachable to the media, not to me. I am in touch with everybody and I am speaking to everybody, they will come back. Our coalition is going on smoothly. I was relaxed and I am relaxed. Don't worry, be happy."

Lucknow: Just days after the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) announced their alliance in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections, a leader of Mayawati’s party has shocked by making controversial remarks against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BSP) in the state.

A video tweeted by news agency ANI shows BSP leader Vijay Yadav making the shocking remarks in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad on Tuesday. In the video, Vijay can be heard telling the crowd that they should not fear anything and it is the BJP workers who should be afraid now.

“Inn BJP waalon ko toh dauda dauda kar maarenge. Ghabrane ki zaroorat nahi hai. Aaj inhe nani yaad aa gai hogi, mari hui nani, ki SP-BSP ek ho gaye,” Yadav said, making objectionable remarks.

Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav had announced the alliance in Lucknow on Saturday, at a joint press conference. The two parties announced that they would contest 38 seats each out of the total 80 in the state.

While two seats have been left for the smaller allies, it was decided that the alliance would not field any candidates in Amethi and Rae Bareli, considered to be Gandhi bastions and currently held by Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, respectively.

Interestingly, the two parties hit out at the Congress as well and said it will not be part of the Opposition alliance. Congress has now said that it will go it alone in Uttar Pradesh and contest all 80 seats in the state that sends most MPs to Parliament.

For some reason some people in BJP is afraid of "Shivraj" as he is very popular in MP even after losing the election.

In a jolt to the HD Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) government in Karnataka, two Independent MLAs today withdrew support to the seven-month-old ministry amid turmoil triggered by charges of horse-trading flung at each other by the ruling coalition and the BJP.

Even as BJP has clearly stepped up its efforts to topple the HD Kumaraswamy government in Karnataka, Congress circles believe the saffron rival could be more keen to bring about a regime change in Madhya Pradesh. Pulling no punches, chief minister Kamal Nath on Tuesday warned BJP to "protect its own house" and not to bother about the Congress government.

Tax announcements:

• No tax till Rs 5 lakh income for individuals tax payers
• Standard deduction increased to Rs 50,000 from Rs 40,000 for salaried class
• Individuals with gross income up to 6.5 lakh rupees will not need to pay any tax if they make investments in provident funds and prescribed equities
• TDS threshold for home rent increased from Rs 1.8 lakh to 2.4 lakh
• Interest income up to Rs 40,000 in post offices and banks made tax free
• Capital gains tax exemptions under Section 54 to be available for two homes.
• No tax on notional rent for second self-occupied home
• Income Tax returns to be processed within 24 hours and returns will be paid immediately

• Assured income for farmers: Govt approves assured income support scheme for small and marginal farmers under which every farmers having up to 2 hectare of lands will get Rs 6,000 per year in three equal installment. This will benefit 12 crore small and marginal farmers and the expenditure of nearly Rs 75,000 crore for the scheme will be borne by the Centre. The scheme will be effective from December 1, 2018.
• Interest subvention for farm loans: Instead of rescheduling of crop loans, the farmers severely affected by natural calamities will get 2 percent interest subvention and additional 3 per cent interest subvention upon timely repayment
• 2% interest subvention to farmers who pursue animal husbandry, fisheries jobs through Kisaan credit cards
• Kamdhenu scheme for animal husbandary
• Govt to build 1 lakh digital villages

TBH, I was expecting bit more rural relief and fiscal deficit blowing out to about 4% (i.e 0.6% additional...or about 20 billion spending from the level now). Seems BJP is far more confident on the sentiment riding and kept tight belt....credit to them if they can pull this off. It also gives some peace of mind that BJP ground survey results are OK election wise.

The (lower) middle class tax relief stuff honestly should have been done last year....but I guess they figured election time it would have the most voter impact.

Everything else big ticket wise (unorganised sector insurance scheme 50/50 matching etc)...will have to see the deployment and result of it. BJP will obviously focus a bit on the ramp window from now till the election....there may be more announcements from PM/FM in this time period too.
