In a significant development, Indian Navy warships constantly tracked a Chinese research vessel which entered the Indian Ocean Region last month at a time when tensions rose on the land borders in Ladakh between the two nations.

The Yuan Wang class research vessel had entered the Indian Ocean Region from Malacca straits last month. It was constantly tracked by Indian Navy warships deployed there in the region, Government Sources said.

The Chinese research vessel returned to China a few days ago after being under constant watch of Indian Navy vessels, the sources said.

Such research vessels have been coming regularly from China and they try to gain sensitive information about Indian maritime territory.

In December last year, the Chinese research vessel Shi Yan 1 was carrying out research activities in the Indian waters near Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and was detected by maritime surveillance aircraft operating there.

Such vessels could have also been used by the Chinese to spy on the Indian activities in the Island territory from where India can keep a close eye on the maritime movements in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and South-East Asian region.

Since laws do not allow foreign countries to carry out any research or exploration activities in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Indian Navy warship at that time had asked the Chinese research vessel to move out of Indian waters.

So the Chinese have been researching right inside Indias EEZ on their ports without any resistance. Clearly the Indian military are afraid, even if they do deperately pretend otherwise.
Surely Indians are cowards, the ship remained in Indian EEZ for weeks. They then printed the news when the vessel departed.

Nonsense, you need to read up on Maritime Law. Chinese vessels have the right of innocent passage within Indian EEZ. Just as India has the right to innocent passage through Chinese EEZ. Try to raise your India put downs to a higher better informed standard.

Another pointless thread about an event that is barely newsworthy.

Are you sure about it, the vessel is not a Civilian cargo ship. It stayed in Indian waters for surveillance and did not leave until its tasks were accomplished.

As long as it is not engaged in exploitation of natural resources in breach of economic exclusivity the Chinese can do whatever the hell they want.

Are you again sure about it, its a Naval vessel not a civilian one for reconnaissance purposes. Damn we dont even spare Indian fisherman let alone an Indian Submarine in our waters.

I don't think Shi Yan 1 is a naval vessel in any case UNCLOS article 58 does not make any distinction between military or civilian traffic.

UNCLOS Article 58

Rights and duties of other States in the exclusive economic zone 1. In the exclusive economic zone, all States, whether coastal or land-locked, enjoy, subject to the relevant provisions of this Convention, the freedoms referred to in article 87 of navigation and overflight and of the laying of submarine cables and pipelines, and other internationally lawful uses of the sea related to these freedoms, such as those associated with the operation of ships, aircraft and submarine cables and pipelines, and compatible with the other provisions of this Convention. 2. Articles 88 to 115 and other pertinent rules of international law apply to the exclusive economic zone in so far as they are not incompatible with this Part. 3. In exercising their rights and performing their duties under this Convention in the exclusive economic zone, States shall have due regard to the rights and duties of the coastal State and shall comply with the laws and regulations adopted by the coastal State in accordance with the provisions of this Convention and other rules of international law in so far as they are not incompatible with this Part.

under naval laws of passage, a foreign naval ship doesn't require permission to be in others territory given they're passing by... so as long as the vessel keeps moving and doesn't stay at one place for more than 24 hours... they're not breaking any laws.
