Indian Navy receives 3rd destroyer of Project 15B

Being in denial doesn't work. There is a reason why USA, China, Russia, UK, now include South Korea and in near future Australia as well are inducting large destroyers plus developing cruise missiles with more than 1000 KM range. They are not drunk or stupid. Tomahawk Block V has 1500 KM range and can hit a fast-moving ship with same precision as a fixed land target. Ukraine wars have also proved that you need missiles which can hit targets deep inside your enemy territory and do lot of damage.

Right now, India has enough destroyers and Frigates, but what they lack are cruise missiles with enough range to really turn them into a monster. Pakistan Navy also needs heavy Frigates, Destroyers and Submarines which have VLS to carry and fire long range land attack cruise missiles. Also, Pakistan should work with China to develop something similar to Tomahawk BLOCK V. As for India with current range of Brahmos their destroyers will have to come at a place where they would be easy targets for our fighter jets. But if they manage get a 1000 to 1500 KM range missile, they can attack us from a distance where they would be relatively safer.

Future wars will not be fought with missiles which only have 300 KM range. Future wars will be fought with new type of anti-ship missile which has 1000 to 1500 KM range and even more and can hit targets whether they are fast moving ships or targets on land. The cruise missile which Putin showed few years ago and claimed it has unlimited range due to nuclear fuel. That type of missile is the future along with guidance system of what Tomahawk BLOCK V has. Either you get that technology, or you will lose the war.
LRCM is in development with the range of 1500Kms. Should be inducted by late 20s. LRCM is a naval variant of Nirbhay. We have struggled with the development of the cruise missile but thankfully the project is in full flow!!

your point stands true with regards to land attack capability, longer range and stealth is the key for that. India still needs to do a lot of work for that. however, my argument was about anti ship cruise missiles, not about LACM
In future wars LACM carried by ships will also be primary Anti Ship weapons. Tomahawk BLOCK V has 1500 KM range and can hit fast moving ships with same precision as can it hit fixed land targets. That is future of Naval future. In fact call it present as one country already has that technology.

You have absolutely no idea of the main reason why the Brahmos is considered the most dangerous Anti Ship missile.

It's not the speed of Mach 3/3.5, it's not even the fact that it has enough kinetic energy to literally break a destroyer sized ship in half during tests, it's not even the fact that it has an accuracy of 1 meters during testing and as if all this was not enough, it's not even the fact that it has 3 redundant systems of every single electronic part inside it, which means that even if it's jammed or hit by an EMP or 2, it can still keep going as if nothing happened. No. The main reason that Brahmos is so respected and feared is because it has the ability to perform 3 dimensional S Maneuvers in the terminal phase at Mach 3/3.5 which makes CIWS systems useless and most Missile defence systems very very difficult to counter it. A missile that flies straight is easy to counter with current technology. But a missile that moves randomly in a Zig Zag manner is very difficult to stop. Especially when it moves at Mach 3.

MUMBAI: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has delivered third Stealth Destroyer of Project 15B Class Guided Missile Destroyer i.e. Yard 12706 (IMPHAL) to the Indian Navy on Friday. The ship is constructed using Indigenous steel and is amongst the largest Destroyers constructed in India, with an overall length of 164 meters and a displacement of over 7500 Tons.

The MDL spokesperson said: "The ship is a potent platform capable of undertaking a variety of tasks and missions, spanning the full spectrum of maritime warfare. It is armed with supersonic Surface-to-Surface ‘Brahmos’ missiles and ‘Barak-8’ Range Surface to Air Missiles. Towards undersea warfare capability the Destroyer is fitted with indigenously developed anti-submarine weapons and sensors, prominently the Hull mounted Sonar Humsa NG, Heavy weight Torpedo Tube Launchers and ASW Rocket Launchers."

This ship has completed all Sea Trials in three CSTs (Contractor’s Sea Trials) including firing of major critical weapons in the very first CST. Ship is the first amongst all P15B ships which is to be fitted with upgraded Brahmos missiles having dual role capability of Long Range & Land attack. Further, IMPHAL is the first Naval Warship being commissioned with accommodation of Woman officers and sailors.

The ship can accommodate a crew of 312 persons, has an endurance of 4000 Nautical Miles and can carry out a typical 42 days mission with extended mission time in out of area operation. The ship is equipped with two helicopters onboard to further extend its reach. The ship is propelled by a powerful Combined Gas and Gas Propulsion Plant (COGAG), consisting of four reversible Gas Turbines, which enables her to achieve a speed of over 30 knots (approx 55 Kmph). The Ship boasts of a very high level of automation with sophisticated digital networks such as Gigabyte Ethernet based Ship Data Network (GESDN), Combat Management System (CMS), Automatic Power Management System (APMS) and Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).

The first Ship of P15B (Visakhapatnam) was commissioned on November 21, 2021. The second ship (Mormugao) was commissioned on December 18, 2022. The third ship (IMPHAL) has been delivered to Indian Navy on Friday. The fourth ship (Surat) was launched on May 17, 2022 and is at an advance stage of outfitting.

We know we are slow, but with projects in line like ITCM & LRASM we will eventually reach there.

TASL has partnered with INDRA SISTEMAS to manufacture 25×naval version of Indra LTR-25 LANZA to replace secondary radar on all flagship frontliners!
It will replace LW-08 radars!

Logistics nightmare if you want more and lose in war

My only objection with P15 class is their shortage of VLS cells

They only have 48 VLS cells ie 16 for Brahmos ASCM and 32 for Barak 8 SAM

compared to 90 VLS carried by USN Arleigh Burke class and Chinese Type 55 class

I thought Tomahawk's max range is 2500 Km's?

With modern missiles, 32 missiles can hit 32 targets, with half as many missiles as before (64 at 2 per target). It brings the cost per vessel down by a massive margin.
And this trend of 32 missiles on the hulls in not just happening in India. The Russians have 32 LR-MR-SAMs on the Admiral Gorshkov class, only 24 MR-SAMs on the Admiral Grigorovich. On the other side of the Pacific, the US Navy only plans on having 32 Mk 41 cells on the Constellation class of frigates, to be shared between Tomahawks and SAMs. The French Aquitaine class air defense variant also sport just 32 VLS cells. It shows a growing trust in these numbers due to the capabilities of new generation of SAMs.
Overall, I firmly believe that 32 SAMs on Indian Navy vessels are adequate given their quality. The package of BrahMos plus Barak 8 as I like to call it BB8, is excellent and complements each other

Nilgiri Class Frigates with almost weighing P-15 destroyers and IN has already planned to higher wt ships but Planning Department thinkers needs to rethink about having size of VLS on board of future capital ships.
