Indian Navy Chief on a five-day visit to Bangladesh

NEW DELHI (PTI): Aiming to enhance defence ties with Bangladesh, Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma is on a five-day visit to the neighbouring country where he will attend the raising day ceremony of their young navy.

"The Navy chief will meet Bangladesh President, Prime Minister and senior military officers during his visit. He will also visit major ports there," navy officials said here Wednesday.

The visit is part of India's naval diplomacy in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Besides attending ceremonies at Bangladesh's biggest port at Chittagong, Verma will visit Mongla and Khulna ports, they said.

This is the seventh raising day of Bangladesh's navy which came into being in 2004 after India gave them two of its naval vessels.

India and Bangladesh have shared a healthy defence relationship in last few years as steps have been taken by the two sides to improve military ties.

Ahead of the Navy chief visit, a naval tanker INS Airavat was also sent to Bangladesh to participate in the raising day function and for public viewing.

The ship will showcase its capabilities in disaster management and relief operations during cyclones and other natural calamities.

"Bangladesh has been a victim of cyclones in its coastal areas. We are also looking forward to strengthen ties by offering them our assistance in disaster management," the officials said.

Bangladesh seeks greater naval exchanges with India - The Economic Times

DHAKA: Bangladesh has sought greater training facilities for its naval officers and sailors in India and exchange of visits that would increase the professional skills of the personnel of both countries.

President Mohammed Zillur Rahman made this point while receiving visiting Indian Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma here.

The president, as also Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, recalled India's "great contribution" in Bangladesh's war of libration in 1971, United News of Banghladesh (UNB) news agency reported.

Verma expressed his happiness at visiting Bangladesh's naval bases, including that in Chittagong.

He highly appreciated the performance and skill of Bangladesh naval officers and sailors, The Daily Star said Thursday.

Verma said Bangladesh people were 'hardworking', and expressed confidence that they would be able "to develop the country through dedication and determination".

"We'll be very happy to strengthen the relation and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries in the coming days," he said.

Verma, who is on a five-day visit here, appreciated the curriculum of the National Defence Staff College of Bangladesh.

Hasina said Bangladesh gives importance to friendly relations with all its neighbours including India.

She also congratulated Verma on India's winning the 2011 cricket World Cup.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Rajeet Mitter was present on the occasion.

I am astonished by your ignorance, but is it the first ever incident in history that a Military chief visiting the President or Prime minister of a certain country?? Recently COAS of Bangladesh Army was greeted by sri lankan President, Never Knew he was taking orders from Bangladesh Army Chief

Task Force against pirates may be......

There is already a taskforce against pirates.

Thats not performing well. There were several BD and other container ships blundered in recent times while Indian Navy was still patrolling in Indian Ocean. Therefore we had talks with the srilankan navy on joint operations. Although I doubt if that'll materialize.

Anyways, wonder whats on the menu.

When a Chief of any Army Navy or Af visits a foreign nation, he has to pay his respects to the Heads of State and Heads of Government.

That is the protocol.

Ya offcorse as Srilankan navy is world No.1 navy & bangladesh stands no.2 in world...

I would not find it surprising if one even want the cooperation of the Burkina Faso navy, if they have one.

You dont need India's permission to join it, it is a multinational task force.
Not that BD or lanka will bring anything special, but it is the thought that matters :)
