In the first place, it was voluntary, and largely a practice of the Rajput warrior class. On two occasions, both the conquest of Chitor by barbarians, all the women killed themselves, and the men then rode out and fought to the death. Among these people, women of such classes did kill themselves on their husband's pyre.

In the second place, this practice stopped in the 19th century, when the reformers Raja Rammohun Roy, Iswarchandra Vidyasagar, and others led mass movements against it and got the British to pass laws against it.
