IAF plans to buy 100 missiles for Jaguar

In a bid to add more firepower to its fighter fleet, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning to acquire over 100 close combat air-to-air missiles for the Jaguar aircraft. The Request for Proposal (RFP) for the acquisition of over 100 of these close combat missiles has been sent to five missile manufacturers including the Raytheon Corporation from United States, Israeli Raphael and European missile consortium MBDA. “We have received the RFP from the Indian Defence Ministry for close combat air to air missiles for the Jaguar fighter aircraft. We are looking to understand the requirements of the IAF and after that we will decide about the missile that can be offered to them," Raytheon Vice President Dennis J Carroll said in Paris. We have not yet gone through the details of the Indian requirements but we can offer our AIM-9X and AMRAAM for close range combat requirements," Carroll said. The Israelis are expected to offer the Derb-5 missile in the contract. With these missiles on-board the Jaguar, IAF wants to improve the lethality of the fighter aircraft in close range air-to-air combat with enemy aircraft. It has the role of striking deep inside the enemy territory since they were inducted in the IAF in early 80s.

SU 34 would be very costly as compared to Jaguars, so replacing it with sheer numbers of SU 34 would be an expensive game!

No mate...the Full back shares abt 55% - 60% commonality with the MKI and so it will rather be cheap for the IAF to operate these.

Can anyone can tell what are the different roles of aircrafts in IAF's inventory?

MKI - Frontline fighter,Multi Role (Air superiority,SEAD,Strike missions, escort to bombers)

Fulcrum - Frontline Air superiority or Air dominance

Mirage 2000 - Strike mission ,more or less a multirole platform

Mig 27,Jaguar - Dedicated ground attack aircrafts (Jaguar has the capability for nuclear option)

Mig 21 Bisons - Interceptor,Point defence

LCA - interceptor with a average A2G operations.

Future:

Rafale/SH* -exactly like the MKI but medium range.A slight emphasis on groung attack in case of SH.

PAKFA/FGFA : Exact same as MKI - Omni role...but in a more deadly,effective way.
* Most probable MRCA fighter.
Hope I ve not missed out any Fighter...

There is a difference between Air-Superiority and Air-Dominance . Fulcrum can never be for Dominance
When you dominate an Air-space means that your air-craft fly streamlined without any danger around you over whole Air-space , neutralizing any ground assets remaining .
When you dominate means you neutralize every SAM threat / Air defence that is there.
Now Guess which Aircraft in our inventory can do that ????:agree:

And which aircraft in USAF achieved Air-Dominance in Iraq/Kabul .

Mig29 = Air superiority Yes :agree:
Domination over complete Air-space No

Im just a poor Engineer in TCS.....no Boeing,no deal broKer.

For me its the Rafale all the way and IIRC u also support Rafale rite..?

But we must be realistic because manmohan sab being Pro-US and the name SH having a certain awe around it..it is definitely one of the leading contenders.

Ain't LCA supposed to be multi-role?

It is....but y i mentioned decent and not good is because of the limitation on the amount of weapons it can carry and the combat range.

But wiki says initial cost is like $36 million per piece that too 1997 price!!

Even if it comes aroung 45 mils now i say its a very sweet deal for that cost.
But we can bring down the cost by locally producing the local comps and thru ToT

^^^^sorry to correct you....jaguars will be replaced by AMCA.....india's own next gen fighter...but after the lca saga it seems difficult.......

moreover lets replace mig-27...after all IAF is not satisfied even with the upgraded aircraft..........so what will be a worthy replacement for it..................
