NEW DELHI: The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is likely to construct the border fence between Oman and Yemen. Only two Indian agencies - CPWD and Engineering Projects India Ltd (EPIL) - were shortlisted in a secret bidding by the Oman government.

Sources said the Oman government wanted to give the contract to an agency outside Oman and Yemen to avoid controversy. Government officials said that CPWD had quoted Rs 1,600 crore for the 288-km-long fence work, which is likely to be completed within four years. "We have a good track record in installation of fences along border. It's a prestigious project for us," said a government official.

A nine-member delegation from Oman had also visited India a few months ago to see security arrangements at the border with Pakistan, which includes the fencing work.

Oman wants to fence its border with Yemen as it is concerned about the growing presence of al-Qaida in the country. The border fencing is also a part of Oman's bid to prevent a Tahrir Square-like uprising from Yemen.

What is the reason for a fence between Yemen and Oman? As a half Yemeni I find that strange considering that Omanis are basically Yemeni immigrants. Even the Sultan's family.

The further back in history we go, we will find out all of them are immigrants from Yemen.

Yemen was the center of wealth and knowledge, and now every one is fencing and pushing it !

4 years? I think that's too long. Yemeni and Oman borders is not long...??

Plus there is always water smuggling routes...

:lol:if that is the parameter then Omanis should look else where

You need to do some reasearch. Before the GoI spent a HUGE amount on border fencing infiltarations into India were comman place nowadays the stream is but a trickle- the only locations that are still vulnerable are the ones where fencing is tough ie in the mountains or in swamps/lakes. The gaps in the Mountains though are watched over by UAVs and remote sensors and at the hint of an infiltration bid a team of Special-Operations-capable Infantry or even SF are dispatched by air. On the BD front, yes the situation is not as great but steps are now being taken. These gaps are being plugged now.

The expenditure by the GoI on such systems would boggle your mind mate.

Additionally India is now setting up the most extensive and comprehensive network of radars and electro optical sensors on earth along the entire length of its coastline. India very much is turning into "fortress India" (a term used in the past).

It is interesting though, that at a time when India is inviting the Israelis to draw up and implement detailed plans to plug all gaps on the Indian borders, Indian companies are going abroad to provide work on this front! Ironic!

Actually, Many prominent Jordanian tribes descend from Yemen, I get to say, Yemenis are the most polite and the bravest among Arabs. BTW, my father was an educational supervisor at Al-Sheher and Al-Mukallah I think in 1987...
