SILCHAR
INDIA) :
About 2,000 people looked on as 80-odd tea workers drank and danced around 55-year-old Jawaharlal Mura - his hands and legs tied up with rope - chanting "Jai Ma Kali", before lynching him for allegedly practising black magic on Thursday afternoon. The attack happened at Narainpur Tea Estate in Assam's Cachar district, 80km from here.
"We saw in our dreams that Mura was a witch and we killed him in accordance with the desires of Goddess Kali," an irate villager later told police.
Cachar SP Diganta Bora said, "This is a case of witch-hunting. We have arrested 11 people, including three women, in connection with the killing."
Bora said the residents of Kalabeelbasti, an out-garden of Narainpur Tea Estate, accused Mura of being a witch and held him responsible for the illnesses and deaths of some persons in the garden.
On Thursday afternoon, the frenzied mob played out a curious ritual before killing the man they had branded a witch. They caught hold of Mura and tied up his hands and legs with rope. They then bathed him, smeared vermillion on his forehead and performed a puja at Kali's 'thaan' (altar) under an old banyan tree in the tea garden. The men and women then drank and danced around him, invoking the goddess's name, before lynching him. His body was later buried in a hillock a little distance from his home.
On Friday, Mura's body was exhumed and sent to the Silchar Medical Collage Hospital for autopsy.
