Gone are those days where you sabotage the enemy going in a Jeep... These are for Counter Insurgency type Missions where The commandos can reach the Spot as fast as possible, Especially Desert Commandos where patrolling is a Challenge....

These are all pretty looking cars with foreign engine and doesn't meet the criteria as set by army.

And What makes you think engines are not produced here in India??

I don't know about others but AXE engine maker is a South Korean company which I think Mahindra acquired recently. I don't know if the deal allows them to bring the engine tech to India.

Axe is a Joint venture with Mahindra and an Israeli company.... But TATA and Ashok leyland Are worlds 4th and 5th largest Truck manufacturers and Both own several research facilities in and Out side the Country and I do not think they need to import Engines especially TATA when they produce Engines for there Heavy 8X8 trucks after initial imports of "ISLE 375 HP Euro III engines" Below Posted

Don't know about TATA.

About TATA; some of their engines are their own, some from FIAT (India) while some are from Cummins (India). Some of their own engines have design elements from AVL. But all engines are made in India.

About Mahindra's Bolero engine it has basic design elements from Peugeot and later worked over by AVL. But the engine plant is Mahindra's own.

Maruti Suzuki's original diesel engine was from Peugeot, now it is looking at Volkswagen to provide diesel engines, since VW has a major share-holding in Suzuki and vice-versa.

Since Mahindra has bought into Ssangyog (70%) it stands to reason that they will share many things. In any case, the Ssangyong engine designs are from Mercedes Benz. There used to be a Mercedes Benz Micro-Bus which was actually a Ssangyong with a MB engine.

AFAIK, some AL engines are their own, some from IVECO (since IVECO had an earlier involvement in AL) and from HINO (JV). But again, they have their own engine plant. Actually both AL and TATA even have their own foundrys where engine blocks are cast.

The long and short of it, is that nowadays, engines may be designed or sourced either in-house or from external sources, depending simply on the economics. If there is a large volume requirement, then a automobile manufacturer sets up its own engine plant, otherwise may be content to buy from some other source- some times even a competitor! Components are made across many manufacturing sources and across many countries/continents.

i wonder if many auto manufacturers world-wide design and manufacture every bit and piece of of their vehicles, simply because it is not worthwhile to do so. One interesting example is the TATA Indica; the drive-train and mechanicals and basic body was designed in-house. Since it was a passenger car, the basic body design was worked over by Pinin Farina in Italy. (i've seen the first mock-up and drawings/photos). It had a rather more angular shape than the present version but essentially the same. That design was rejected in favor of another Italian design house I.D.E.A. which gave the present rounded contours.

Actually the article mentioned by you speaks of an AXE engine for the Rexton & not a Ssangyong engine for AXE.

Who's engine?

There seems ot be some confusion re: engine, or bigger issue, tech. ownership, right?

For the record, tech. is like ... hehe ... motherhood. So who owns motherhood, what's it worth, what value do we place on motherhood?

Patents - for now the patents are legally accepted norm in establishing tech. ownership. Ownership limit is 20 yrs. After that, the patent protected technology's tenure expires and it becomes public property.

Engines have been around for more than 150 yrs. 100's of thousands of patented and non-patented engine technology is publicly available. Anyone can make any of said engines no problem. Problem - maybe not latest technology!

My professional take on this problem of latest technology goes back to the parallel of motherhood. What's the best motherhood? Who, what, how, when, where?

Technology and tech. patents may be used favorably by 1'st defining the problem in detail. Another thing about tech. is that it is modular, built upon generation-upon-generation of evolution.

Idea should be to research the correct solution, modify and apply it to the correct problem. In S. Asia, it's done a$$ backwards. 'Industrialists', in cahoots with the corrupt system and politician-bureaucratic mafia; acquire some moth-balled, rejected or donated tech. mostly of EU origin. West have excess tech. ! Then they look for contacts, contracts and much smuggling later, set up a plant. Only then they look for applications and hire a full 'marketing' dept. in case of big Co.'s.

In India this has been happening for 100's of yrs. and more. Natural evolution means that Co.'s were forced to tinker with what they got. One may call it 'indiginisation', hack-job, or simply ... 'jugaad'. Great for large, monopoly profits in the cartel type, closed economy that was India & S. Asia earlier.

10 yrs. ago Govt. of India changed the rules when foreign Co.'s saw the future danger and forced India to accept technology patents. Too little, too late. By this time Indians had already put up or where solidly on the way to put up the world's biggest technology factories. China did it earlier, but they were not so savvy and mass copied everything and keep doing so and also put up largest factories in the world, so sorry their reputation got shot in the mean-time.

Getting back to the point, nobody 'owns' either motherhood or technology unless prima-facie evidence can be deposed of. A patent is to technology what dna is to motherhood, everything!

Doesnot meet IA's requirement ??/ Who told you this ?? Last i heard that trials were being conducted and this happened last year. Nobody revealed the result, if you have any information on the result please share with us. I asked many times on this forum about the result but nobody had any info...
