Indian Army Raises the Stakes in Its War Against the Maoists.
Posted by Jyoti Thottam Monday, June 27, 2011 at 5:32 am

June has been a deadly month in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, the heart of the Naxal movement, India's raging Maoist insurgency. Six security forces were killed on Sunday, bringing the total number of police and paramilitary fatalities to 43 in the month of June alone. That represents almost half of the fatalities among security forces in the state in 2011; and more than 10% of the total number of deaths, including civilians and suspected Maoists.

What's behind the escalating violence? The Indian Army stepped into the fight. Army officials insist that they are there simply to train, not to engage in a direct confrontation with the Maoists, who hold vast stretches of central India. More than 5,000 people have died in Maoist-related violence since 2005, making this conflict far more deadly than jihadi extremism or militancy in Kashmir or the northeast. The idea of sending in soldiers to fight the Naxals is a controversial one — India would be, in effect, deploying its Army against its own citizens, and it would be doing so not on a restive international border but in its mineral- and forest-rich heartland. But as I reported earlier this year, the Army chief was careful to make sure that his troops had rules of engagement before entering Naxal territory, giving them legal authority to attack if attacked.

That now seems almost inevitable. The Maoists have issued statements condemning the Army's presence in Chhattisgarh and criticizing the state government for allocating land to the defense ministry in a place where so many subsistence farmers and forest-dwellers are fighting to keep their own land. Several Indian newspapers have carried reports from Indian intelligence sources that the Maoists are planning an attack on the new Army camps. Whether they are there only for training or not, the presence of the Army will only complicate what is already a tense situation on the ground and exacerbate the already tense rivalry between the central and state security forces.

Meanwhile, there are continued reports of the repression of civilians. Aman Sethi's recent piece in Caravan tells the story of a village near the site of the notorious ambush of April 2010. The people he met allege a year-long campaign of harrassment by security forces, who considered them Maoist sympathizers. It's a vicious circle that the Indian security establishment has not yet begun to address: brutal attacks by the Maoists lead to indiscriminate crackdowns by security forces, which in turn fuels fear among civilians and their tacit support of the Maoists, who use that support to launch new attacks. Sending in the Army might inspire confidence in India's cities, where people have grown weary of this endless war, but it is unlikely to break this disturbing cycle of violence.

what we need to do is increase training for crpf jawans...... During june itself the maoists ambushed crpf jawans killing a few and losing just one guy, however when they tried the same on a group of highly trained anti naxals special forces.... They were forced to retreat, losing quite aa few men, while we suffered no casualties

.
In my opinion IA should be brought in with full artillery and air support against the maoists asap.CRPF guys are finding it difficult to battle the naxals more and more.I am sure IA can cut these bastards down. But our govt will never grow the spine to do the right thing. They will never understand that these bastards should never be left alive just because they are indians, insted they should be burnt alive..

.
Why not deploy a small number of IA SF/IN SF? they are very effective in small teams and in this kind of terrain and can operate with Centre/State forces of independently.

bit of an overkill...... just train your crpf jawans at cijws for a few months before sending them to the maoist infected areas...... also provide them with decent close quarters weapons like tavors etc

What's happened to these guys.......

Indian Army has no business fighting the Naxals. It is a political and law and order problem, unlike militancy in the North East or Kashmir. Distinction needs to be made and appropriate measures need to be implemented. Army and the firepower it brings to the table is NOT the solution here.

Just In case, one needs to look at the political drama queens that make up AP, UP, Orissa & Bihar politics, the mindset of the rich there and you will understand why maoists thrive there.

What we need is a better trained police force in the cities, better trained paramilitary in the jungles and strong political measures.

I thought that the Naxalite insurgency, was worse than the Kashmir insurgency and the NE insurgency?

Well, that's what Manmohan Singh said anyway.

Of course it is worse, considering that those militancies are losing their steam steadily. But one needs to differentiate between what constitutes a foreign supported separatist ideology fueled militancy and a equal rights driven 'armed revolution' (- so to speak). The concerns and demands of these people are genuine but the method they choose to fight for it is so wrong.

See the difference?

Oh really!Really! It is 'just' a political problem to you?Sitting in your home in US and talking big here is very easy man.Don't poke your nose here if you don't know the ground reality.

Dammit provide the forces with resources....Our forces are fighting them on their level. They are not using enough MPVs, helicopter are 8-10 (why the hell they are even using it ?), UAVS are only on paper. When our politicians will consider the importance of the life of a soldier ? PC has failed on this front...

That is what I thought too first. But this is clearly getting out of hand with different states taking its own steps and refusing a co-ordinated patrolling resulting in ever mounting casualties and a drop in morale.

Bringing in the Army is soon becoming inevitable. Right or wrong is a moot point. You just cant have a parallel Government being run by armed thugs.

It was once, not now.

You don't call thugs running illegal mining mafia to the tune of 2000 crores and bumping off people at random branding them as informers, blowing up schools, bridges, roads, telecom/electric towers as caped crusaders fighting against the evil capitalists.

As you say BOSS.

PC failed badly in this front of naxals .
We should employ our military and not para military to fight this naxals .

As some one rightly said above that para military is fighting on the same lvl as that of naxals using conventional weapons .
No new weapons are used .
No air support nothing .

I still dont understand what's the use of fightining like this where we are losing same numbers of our troops .
It's better not to send any1 there and let naxals rule if our concerned ministry doesnt send our best ppl to fight them .
Total BS that is .
I have zero hope from BJP also in this regard . Both of the parties have made naxals as a political issue to wins seats . Shittards
