Indian Army finally starts rifle trials

The Indian Army began trials in early September to select a 5.56 mm multi-calibre assault rifle.

Featuring four models, the trials began at the Bakloh cantonment in the Himalayas, 565 km north of New Delhi. Spread across locations including the northern Ladakh region, Punjab's plains, and the Rajasthan desert, the trials are expected to last several months.

The competing rifles are Beretta's ARX160 (Italy), Colt's Colt Combat Rifle (United States), the Czech Republic's CZ 805 BREN, and the Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) ACE 1 - a variant of its ACE rifle. SIG Sauer, which responded to the November 2011 tender for 66,000 rifles, is not participating in the trials.

good. winter trials. i hope this too is handled like mrca but faster of course.

baba anthony has become a historical figure in indian defence. a statue should be erected in front of MoD with the plaque " An example" on it.

66000 was intial number of contract after which 2-3 lacs rifles will manufacture locally under tot.

The MCIWS will be standard issue for all IA infantry, replacing INSAS.

These are for elite units like RR etc.

so these are gonna be standard issue for RR ? i smell a contradiction about this and then the numbers being inducted. 2-3 lakhs ? i bet these are for strike corps.

my concern here being lets not make an insas out of the mciws too. do make sure that it works without a problem. does it's job well enough. india actually might regular troops soon enough.


PS : i read that the colt rifle wasn't offered by the time the tender was closed. or the swiss one ?
