Indian Air Force grounds 100 MiG-27 jets

After a fatal crash near Siliguri last week, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has grounded its fleet of nearly 100 Russian-origin MiG- 27 fighters on suspicions of a major engine snag. All five squadrons of the ground attack fighter, deployed primarily in the western and eastern sectors, have been confined to the ground since the February 16 crash in which a Squadron Leader was killed.

Engine trouble is a known problem in the MiG-27 fleet with crashes in the past being attributed to defects in the R 29 engines of the aircraft. More worryingly, the initial probe has pointed to a major flaw in the engine that seems to have occurred during the overhauling of the aircraft by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The entire fleet had also completed an indigenous upgrade programme last year that was executed by HAL.

. . . .
mmrca was tender of 120 jets am i wrong?

126.... Which can go upto 200.... not sure, as the first 16 will be built in the place whare it exists and rest will be manufactured under license By HAL with full TOT and Not to forget, This can be further increased to 200, But as of now only 126 planned.

. .
Great news , that they have finally been grounded. Yet , it's worrying that indigenous upgradation may have gone wrong.

hmm.. interesting - the capability of HAL is been called in serious question again! Mig 21s had a much better record before overhauling at HAL facilities.
Seems like it's not the original plane or the pilot that are at fault. It's shoddy overhauling by HAL.
Btw - the grounding is only temporary so the fault that caused the crash is found. If necessary other aircraft will be checked for the same technical problems.
This is a world wide practice. Nothing new

.
Apparently the fleet is temporarily grounded, as usually happens after any crash not attribuale to pilot error. They'll be up and flying soon enough we could assume.

Voilà the reason for the crash and the subsequent grounding:
... the initial probe has pointed to a major flaw in the engine that seems to have occurred during the overhauling of the aircraft by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The entire fleet had also completed an indigenous upgrade programme last year that was executed by HAL.
All aircraft should come with a warning sticker "Keep outside the reach of DRDO, HAL or IRSO".

RIP pilot.

.
IRSO - you meant ISRO ? ISRO has an excellent record in space for India. But unfortunately it is a civilian venture :)

Not to forget that this aircraft served us well for a long time....... At last grounded. I hope the government soon replaces them. ( Putting pilots in heavy risk)

Come on guys check some local news before coming into conclusions.

The IAF today grounded its entire MiG-27 aircraft fleet for checks following last week's air crash near Hashimara inwhich an ace fighter pilot was killed.

It also ordered examination of the aircraft following preliminary report of the court of inquiry suggesting that the mishap could have taken place due to failure of "low pressure turbine blades", a problem tackled only at the overhaul or fourth line servicing stage.

"The MiG-27 aircraft are not flying till the checks ordered on the fleet are completed," a senior IAF officer said here today.

The IAF flies around 160 MiG-27 swing wing aircraft used for both air-to-air and ground attacks in eight of the existing 33.5 squadrons.

Earlier in the day, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal PV Naik said that the the failure of "low pressure turbine blades" was not in the realm of day-to-day base servicing, but was rectified only at the fourth line, overhauling stage.

He said further inquiry into the mishap that killed Wing Commander Oswald on February 16 was in progress.

Naik also said that when an air crash took place, it was not only a matter of grave concern for IAF and the nation, but it also caused "pain" as both an aircraft and a life were lost.

However, he said it was not possible to have "zero accident" rates, but maximum effort should be made to avoid demoralising of the forces when mishaps took place.

Its not due to age but due to faulty machinery....

Well imran bhai you can call them whatever u want but the irony is what will u call mmrca or pakfa

when a plane is decided as the winner of mmrca for say its a typhoon , we all will call it typhoon and we will call PAK_FA as PAKFA

what a stupid remark...

Twist in the plot. I've always said the Indian supremacy in the AF field is a little exaggerated.

God knows when the MMRCA deal would be finalized, god knows what the Indians would get, and god knows at what stage would our JF-17 and J-10 squads would be at by the time Indians even near delivery or production of these new birds.

Indians are indecisive and Pakistanis move ahead with clear objectives. Pak-FA is a good 10 years away from joining the Russian air force and with the IAF running on Indian standard time, it will probably take much longer for the birds landing in India, perhaps more Indian planes would fail along the way - we have a few things going in our favor which wouldn't let India get away with total superiority.
