This is hardly an India bashing article that some Indians misinterpret it to be. It is in fact a celebration of Bengali culture - and let us be honest - it is Bengali culture, not Bangladeshi culture. I don't agree with a lot of it - Bangladeshi running "Indian" restaurants in UK still serve tandoori food, not Bengali cuisine. Most Dunkin Donuts in the US are owned by Patels - that does not mean that Donuts are Gujarati food. And British culture - was sufficiently influenced by all parts of colonized India - pyjamas are probably from the North for example. Bengal of course influenced the most because it was the first to fall in British hands - 1757 - Battle of Plassey. But other parts of India have influenced Britain too. The mistake the author of this article makes is to look at India - the nation-state and Bangladesh - the nation-state. India must be looked at a civilization which influenced the Western civilization and vice-versa - and whether Bangladesh likes it or not, it is part of the Indic civilization.

Whether most liberal people like it or not, Muslim culture is very different from native Indian Hindu/Sikh/Buddhist/Jain culture (and I dont mean this in a bad way, its just a fact).

The only thing Muslims and non-Muslims of South Asia share is language, take that away and we are pretty different people (culturally speaking)...

Culture is seldom religious, correct for Indian religions. But all religions try to influence culture, especially Abrahamic ones like Islam and Christianity. What exactly is Culture? It is a set of languages, eating habbits, dressing/grooming, common practices. Islam/Christianity directly try to affect all of these except language (which it tries to, but has not been successful).

Islam tells you how to dress, what to eat (so does Hinduism with beef), when to eat (ramadan), what to worship, how many times a day to worship, whioch cultural practices are good, which are bad etc.

In the case of native religions with less importance given to conversions like HInduism/Buddhism/Confuciasism/Taoism, the religion is actually formed out of a culture. Hinduism for example has incorporated a lot of the practices, One common example was that ancient Indians used to take baths in the Ganges, and that later got imported into our Hindu religious texts and now the Ganga water is considered holy for Hindus. Hinduism in many ways is influenced by Indian culture in that regard.
