What's new

India wins Olympic gold in javelin throw

Why is the country of 1.4 billion is so low in the list..

Its because they rely too much on small populations like Haryana or Manipur for medals

The core of India's population is Bihar not Haryana

Bihar should be the medal factory state

Things will only improve with time. Here so much emphasis is given on cricket and all other sports are neglected that's why.

Why just Bihar? MP and UP are big states, so more medals should come from them and also other States.

It's not Bihar but UP which tops the list when it comes to population with the entire hindi belt (UP, Bihar, MP & Rajasthan) making up a majority chunk off the population but unfortunately there is no emphasis on sports in these states which is why most athletes you see are from Haryana, North East or the South except for that crappy sport called cricket

Well until the main hindi Ganges cow belt doesn't start winning medals. There won't be a huge increase

You can't rely on jats for a country as large as India

First up, Neeraj Chopra is not a Jat Haryanvi but a Ror Maratha...his ancestor's are Marathas/decedents of Maratha soldiers who migrated to Haryana

Secondly, the percentage of Jats is around 25% each in the states of Haryana and Punjab...so not everyone going into such sports is a Jat

Well it's not just Haryanvi Jats who are winning the medals...North East folks are equally into sports requiring physical strength like boxing and weight lifting. Infact, it was Andhra's Karanam Mallishwari who is the first India woman to win an Olympic Medal that too in weight lifting is a southerner. Most of the other athletes in sporting events like table tennis, badminton, archery are all Southies...majority of our national football team also comprises of North Easterners and South Indians. So we're not relying on any particular community since each state has an emphasis on a particular sport. For instance, majority of India's badminton players come from the states of Andhra & Telangana

Unfortunately, our emphasis and priority is also on a dying sport called cricket where a ton of our funds and resources are diverted. If not for South Asia, cricket would've been long gone...hopefully we allocate our resources to make a mark in the next olympics and other sporting events...particularly swimming where there are a ton of medals to grab

Northeast indians are good also but they're a minority too. 98% of mainland Indians see them as Chinese foreigners when they walk around India

You can't rely on them either

Congrats to India.

Still can't digest why squash never been a part of Olympics. Pakistan lost tons of medal because of no squash. From 60s to 2000s, Pakistan ruled the sport.

Let's not derail the thread by discussing something irrelevant in here...I also emphasized on South Indians and their respective sporting events which they shine. So we do some decent population which can fetch us more medals if given the right funding, facilities, training and resources. Even pulling out a fraction of cricket's funding and diverting them to these sports can do wonders

Haryana is the athletic center of India

Thats factually incorrect as govt allocates almost negligible amount of funds for cricket, it is totally managed by BCCI from huge profits they earn through ticket sales, broadcasting rights etc.

Im sure living in Haryana for centuries. Some of his family intermarried locally

Regardless

Haryana is still the main medal taker

Look at the commonwealth and asian games also

Haryana is the lead for India in medals there too

Relying on Jats in India is like relying on black people in america for their track and field medals

These are a minority people

There is no proof of that since people in arranged marriage setups typically tend to go with people of their same community...though that trend is changing recently

I do agree Haryana is a major sports powerhouse in India but we do have populace from few other states who excel in other sports as stated in my previous sports. Even the US relies on blacks for majority of it's track & field, strength sports...NFL, NBA which are almost entirely black since they're physically stronger and superior unless one sets up a program like china where you train kids from a very young age
