India on Wednesday launched a promotional activity for selling defence equipment to Bangladesh.

‘India and Bangladesh have close cooperation in many diverse areas and therefore are natural partners to pursue further cooperation in the field of defence technologies,’ Indian high commissioner Riva Ganguly Das said at a seminar on Indian defence equipment in Dhaka.

Representatives from twelve different Indian firms participated in the seminar organised by High Commission of India, according to a press release.

Industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, who was chief guest at the seminar, said the seminar provided an opportunity for defence manufacturers from India in developing fruitful partnerships with them [in Bangladesh].

The seminar was held as a part of Indian efforts to export defence equipment to Bangladesh initially under a line of credit extended by India, officials said.

Senior military and civil officials participated in the seminar held two weeks before an official visit of Indian foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and four weeks before an official visit of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi.

Shringla is scheduled to visit Dhaka on March 2 to set grounds for an official visit of the Indian prime minister scheduled for March 16 to 18.

Indian external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar requested Bangladesh to utilise a line of credit extended by India for purchasing military equipment, in a meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart AK Abdul Momen on August 20 in Dhaka.

‘They requested [us] to use the memorandum of understanding signed on $500 million line of credit extended by India [to Bangladesh] for defence purchase,’ Momen told journalists at his office after the meeting.

‘We are yet to buy anything under the defence MoU,’ Momen said, adding that the Armed Forces Division was working on the matter.

The MoU was signed during prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India in April 2017 on the $500 million Indian loan for buying military equipment under suppliers credit system.

. . . . .

I don't understand why a supa pawa like India is dead-set on exporting defense equipment to a poor ldc like BD. With the super advanced tech achieved through vedic revelations, they should export to Europe, US, Canada etc.!!!

Anyway, BD Armed Forces are not the least bit interested in Indian defense equipment. Their constant nagging has become quite annoying honestly. "You should stop embarrassing yourself if you have the least bit of shame and self respect." is what I would like to tell them.....

This is a premium the current BD establishment has to pay to the Indians regardless BD needs those equipments or not. Why premium ? Indian intervention forces stationed in Meghalaya sector acts as a deterrent to potential military coups in BD in order to protect the current regime.
All BD military high ups are well aware of this fact. BD is yet to have it's own formidable intervention force which can protect the current regime from a hostile military take over. Even BD establishment does not trust the 46th Independent infantry brigade which is supposed to defend Dhaka. Ironically, some units of this brigade took part in the assassination of Sheiikh Mujib. This brigade traditionally falls under the direct command of the BD Army chief.

We have not yet utilized any portion of the LoC, since signing the MoU in 2017. So, I am not quite clear how the Hasina Govt. is paying the premium to safeguard her throne here? One would think that Sheikh Hasina would better fare by appeasing the military to prevent a takeover.

They will somehow have to pay. The military has never been 'one'. Appeasing military is like riding a tiger with a difficult dismounting option. Longer you ride , the hunger goes higher. Unlike China, BD Army personnel are not necessarily members of the ruling party. Remember, the most difficult military coup to suppress is the one orchestrated by the mid level officers with JCOs. They are not being appeased so far. UN mission jobs can't buy you properties in NY/Toronto and energy companies like their seniors are enjoying.

I have been telling this from day one.... We are strategic allies and we will need to maintain commonality in platforms.... But nobody was listening.....

Banglades is lucky to have strategic ally like India (thanks to Hasina).... This is like our mini NATO military alliance.... Bangladesh will have access to state of an art weapons of India.... Brahmos, Nirbhay Cruise missiles, NAGA ATGM, Akash air defense system, ASTRA air to air BVR missiles, Pinaka rocket system and what not??? Once this strategic alliance is matured further who knows you may be even allowed to keep Arihant class nuclear submarine on lease..... Imagine BN patrolling BOB with Arihant and K series missiles on it..... BD is lucky to have its hand on such all above sensitive technology.....
