A LONG time ago one of my friends quoted comments of the Western world on Pakistan-India relations as ‘sub-continental stupidity’. Decades have passed, but there is no sign of emergence of any wisdom.

We are a nuclear power and possess a strong and courageous military. Every citizen, young or old, has the passion to protect the motherland by sacrificing his blood and life. We are capable of retaliating when anyone ever tries to challenge our independence.

We are a brave nation. However, unfortunately, we are not that efficient in displaying the matching attitude of a brave nation.

Decency at the national level is national pride. So far we have lacked in displaying it in our actions.Whenever there is an ugly campaign on the other side of the border, we should not repeat it by similar actions. The campaigns are intended for provoking us.

Decency in national behaviour attracts worldwide attention. I am a strong believer that once we opt for decency, it will enforce the other side on revisiting its own.

Whenever there is a war, decency disappears. Decency turns unthinkable at extremes of stupidity or rather war. Mitigating stupidity with stupidity has not helped towards resolution of disputes. Instead, it has further complicated issues. Decency has never been tried.

Fortunately, there is no war going on right now. The possibility of any war during the next few decades is faint due to fear of mutual destruction. Therefore, decency has a chance and we must try it.

If we dig out the reasons behind the recent Indian government-sponsored anti-Pakistan campaign, we can understand that general elections are near in India.

The confession by an Indian official that Indian agencies were behind the Mumbai attacks is crucial for the Congress. It took place under the Congress’s administration. It has become necessary for them to fade out the confession from the media and public mind.

Therefore, the Congress has no choice other than launching an anti-Pakistan campaign. If the Congress lacks in provoking anti-Pakistan sentiments among Indian voters, then the BJP will do so and take the lead. Unfortunately, anti-Pakistani sentiments have played a decisive role in the Indian general elections so far.

It is a similar election stunt as that of hoisting a Pakistani flag on the Delhi Red Fort stunt by the IJI in the 1988 general elections in Pakistan. I am sure the present anti-Pakistan campaign in India will not last long.

Peace is essential for the future generations of both countries. Hostility is easy but brings devastation. Proceeding towards peace is difficult, but it is the only choice and a desired one.
