India vs China - a comparative statistica

four decades ago people made similar sweeping statements such as the above about japanese products..

Today.. Huawei.. a CHINESE manufacturer.. is one of the top supplier of telecommunications equipment..So is ZTE..
All quality products.. and very reliable..
The Chinese are catching up very fast in standardizing equipment.. QC's are being implemented in major establishments..
The much assailed Chinese Iphone of 2007 seems like a toy to the new one I saw today..
the newer.. 'Iphone" copy.. is smooth.. finely engineered..and even the software responds perfectly.. hard to tell the difference unless you open up the apps...
If that is what "copying" brings you.. Id take it any day.. over indigenous achievements..
The Chinese are following a parallel model..
They copy and they innovate.. then merge the two together..

As for the main crux of the topic..

One cannot compare a nation brought up on communism and then rapidly embracing every aspect of the world with India.
Considering all this has been achieved after Mao's "cleanup" that cost a lot of intellectuals and scientists... it is remarkable.
China's rise began in the late seventies.. after Mao's death.. and since then.. it has leapt forwards.. using its strengths as much as possible..
but the main input has been into state institutions first...but private establishments have not been heckled either.
India by contrast.. had its start during the late eighties..and the great "desi" exodus to the US and the west.. the main input going into the private sector..India owes a lot to her private sector.. A strength that till recently was ignored by her state..
India owes a lot of its rise to the Internet and computing.. and Manmohan singh..

If one was to graph the rise.. by that new program.. it would help the thread..

Even during Mao's rule we were far ahead of India at the time. Every important traditional industrial achievement was done in Mao's day:

1st indigenous tank, fighter, hydrogen bomb, ballistic missile, nuclear submarine, synthetic insulin and genetic engineering, all developed before Mao died in 1976. These are things India achieved in the 90's.

Mao changed the lifespan from 37 in 1949 to 73 in 1976. It hasn't budged since. The literacy rate went from 18% to 81% in the same period. We had higher literacy in 1976 than India does today.

Many people misrepresent Mao. In fact, China has ALWAYS been growing at 9% a year, except before 1976, there were 4 years of particular disaster where the economy shrunk 15% (due in part to Mao's policies, but also in part to sanctions from both US and USSR), while after 1976 there was never a disaster.

below_freezing has been trolling himself, check out his posts in threads regarding India.
He's overreacting, saying that he is ignoring the trolls.
Hypocrite.

Largely agreed.

" 1st indigenous tank, fighter, hydrogen bomb, ballistic missile, nuclear submarine, synthetic insulin and genetic engineering, all developed before Mao died in 1976"

--- actually most of them were achieved in late 60s. India did in 90s?? Almost half a century later, which one of them India has achieved TODAY?

81% literacy of CHina in 1976 most likely would be the target of India to beat at 2060!

Whie Mao didn't f#$% up top scientists in national defence industy, he did F$%# up entire 2 generations of Chinese schinetists in ALL other fields as Santro said, during great leap forward and cultural revolution.

Mao single-handedly wasted about 3 decades of China´s economic development (he saved national Defence Industry nonethelss ).

If Mao were slightly more competent on economics, China today would have long passed the USA as the top economic power in the world, with most of her products having more or less the same high quality as japan's or Germany´s.

Mao was a revolutionary leader, and revolutionary leaders while brilliant in the founding of a country, are not exactly great to have around during peace and times for development.

Agreed, but defense industry is far more important than economic development, especially for China in 1950-1970. We still grew for 9% a year excluding 4 during that time. Unfortunately, the cultural revolution did indeed destroy 2 generations of civilian researchers - the affected one, and those that teach the affected ones. China's civilian research only started picking up in 1999. The difference between US and China at least in chemistry and materials science was probably indeed 3 decades in the 80's, 2 decades in early 90's, 1 decade in late 90's early 2000's, and maybe 0-5 years today.

Below_Freezing, you will excuse me if I opine that your argument sounds more like desperate propaganda than any reasonable scientific analysis. Here are a few thought provokers:

1. American railway is slower than China's.
2. Do you think private corporations just pay high salaries for no apparent reason just so India can show off a few elite people to the world?
3. Once again, you are falling into the trap of looking at snapshots rather than looking at the flow of things. Where was India 5 years ago and where are they now? Are they adding, improving? Are they meeting their targets, poverty goals?
4. I do not understand what you mean by "independent" software products.
5. What exactly will prevent India from adding another 500GW to their power grid?

I dont get your reasoning and what you are trying to say. Also, are you implying that India, for instance, is not progressing because as of today, it has 1/3rd the China's capacity. What is your point? If your point is India cant do anything to increase its output or file patents or produce more PhDs, then I'd be very interested in listening to where that kind of hopelessness could possibly come from and what exactly will prevent another country from surging ahead just because China is already x times that country. Maybe you can explain better, but I dont get your arguments and overall hypotheses.

Opine? Are you deliberately trying to talk fancy or do you talk like that in everyday life?

What is the point of this thread? To prove China is better than India with statistics? If so, hten it is well known that China is well ahead in terms of technology, manufacturing, and economy, military. We Indians accept China is superior to us. Since we have accepted it now what? All Indians should take example of China not the West. The West is a horrible model to follow. We should follow in China's footsteps and increase trade and commerce with China instead of feeling feelings of Jealousy and become their friends because they are not bad people. To Indians- what have you done to improve your country? Going to the WEST AND RANTING ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY'S ACHEIVEMENTS is not the answer.

China is ahead in almost every front except freedom

There is a difference between personal freedom and political freedom. Besides you can affect the political process as well, you just have to join the party and civil service.
