Some wonderful observations by our PM.. Thank god, we have some sane people at the helm

NEW DELHI: Asserting that India's "strategic autonomy" would not be compromised while seeking healthy ties with major powers, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said it is too large a country to be "boxed" into any alliance or regional arrangements.

Addressing top Commanders of Defence services here, he observed that India's "toughest challenges" lie in its neighbourhood and the country's growth ambitions cannot be realised unless peace and stability is ensured in South Asia.

While underlining the need to maintain "healthy relations" with all major powers, Singh however made it clear the country's strategic autonomy would be preserved as it is an "article of faith for us".

India, he said, is "too large a country to be boxed into any alliance or regional or sub-regional arrangements, whether trade, economic or political."

Singh said as India's economy grows, the technological capabilities must expand to set higher standards for the modernisation of defence forces and "war fighting doctrines" should be updated to meet "new threats" to the country's security.

"In the ultimate analysis, the strength of a nation flows from the strength of its institutions, its values and its economic competitiveness," the Prime Minister said.

"If we are to sustain a growth rate of 9 to 10 per cent in the forseeable future, we require foreign capital inflow, both portfolio and direct investment, the best of modern technology and access to markets of the advanced economies," he said.

In the global terms, the Prime Minister said, there was a shift of economic and political power to Asia, with the Asia- Pacific region, including the South East Asia needing more attention from India.

"This must seep into our defence and foreign policy planning as never before. This is a palpable desire on the part of the countries of this region to enhance cooperation with us which we must reciprocate," he added.

Describing the nations of the Gulf region, West and Central Asia as "natural partners", he said India had tangible interests in these regions, among which energy security was most important.

"We have to ensure adequate availability of commercial energy to support our growth targets. This requires not only diversification of the sources of our energy imports but also widening of our overall energy mix. It is in this context that we need to operationalise our nuclear energy option, which holds great promise and is a necessity," he added.

Referring to the global economic crisis of 2008, Singh said India had weathered it better than most large economies, as there was a continental sized economy and large internal market. But the challenge, he said, would be to ensure that growth was balanced across all regions and reached all sections of society.

this is the part where MMS needs to give a serious push .....

all that he said about about our economic development is true and being taken good care of.....Antony as a clean "minister" at the helm of a scandal hit MoD is good but insufficient.....we need someone with a proper vision and foresight to handle the military sector...preferably a strong character like Chidambaram.....who is more consultative of our Thinktanks and more receptive to their concerns......

bakwas!!!

same nehru way of thinking. NAM!!!! If India doesn't go for a strategic/defence block that will be a major setback by 2025. When our enemies are uniting, why should we unite with friends?!!!

.
In other words he means then he will continue to mess up things and we will not have Russians as friend because MMS will too much cosying up with US for their discomfert and US will also not be there for us as we are undesided.

The net result is utter confusion.

Its takes vision, will power and guts to take risk Only true leaders have that qualities. And that's a too much for American puppet and pro pakistan manmohan singh.

Though very insightful words by the PM, I highly doubt the practical application and implication of such vision.

While China and Pakistan are already hand in hand, India cannot stay aloft for too long. Leave Americans out , though they are omnipresent all over the world, for our region India needs an ally that too strong one. I think that a regional grouping India, Iran, Russia and Afghanistan is very much important and on the cards too, with recent maneuver's for whatever reason.

One thing is for sure, India cannot get too cosy with America. It is detrimental to our existence.

healthy relatonship is fine...but I see more than friendship with America here...MMS is good leader, butthe way we are moving towards America, it might be harmful for us in the long run. he hiself acknowledges that the toughest challenge lies in the neighbourhood , then why not bring more closer countries like Russia ??

Russia has been a great friend in our worst of times. But there is only a very limited amount to which Russia can help us achieve our ambitions as far as better defense tech, better trade opportunities and better international clout are concerned.

Yes the same mess up. None can win a war alone and no one is fighting alone. Whether we want or not but the theory of non-alignment have to be given up. Geopolitical scenario will not let a power like India to remain alone in future.

Sorry bhai, Abdul Kalam was never PM of India. He was the President, when Vajpaye was PM.

But there is no doubt in any Indian's mind that he is a great man. a real patriot who contributed so much to our nation. We are fortunate to have such great people as Abdul Kalam and Manmohan Singh as our countrymen.

I think he meant that Manmohan Singh was similar to Abdul Kalam in the sense that he is the only non politician to grace the PM's chair just as Kalam was the only non politician to be President.
