India to recruit 89,000 troops, US $ 15 billion for chinese border

. . . . . .
It doesn't matter, we still view you as a smaller neighbor.

Sir it might not matter to you but it matters to them.

Lets look at the situation from an Indian perspective; PLA has built some very impressive infrastructure near the Indian border, and can mobilize at a much quicker pace than IA can. IA is not intending to match PLA bullet for bullet, what the IA wants to do is setup defences that will slow down the PLA advance before IA reinforcements arrive. Looking at the current balance of power, PLA can mobilize much faster and attack at a much more rapid pace before the IA can setup defences and reinforce their positions. I think its perfectly legitimate for the IA to setup the necessary infrastructure to add muscle to their current bases.

PLAAF on the other hand is changing the scenario completely as it strives to become a much more modern and mobile force. PLAAF is adding modern 4th Generation aircrafts at a rapid pace, J10's and J11's are joining the squadrons in scores of numbers. This is why the IAF is setting up bases to counter the PLAAF in an air war as the PLAAF has moved away from a doctrine based on fortification to a doctrine based on deep battles of annihilation. Thus, in my opinion its perfectly understandable for India to secure its flank against China. Whether you view India as a small neighbour or not, fact is that India is a headache for the Chinese war planners as the PLA will always have to guard her flank against India.

Well said, the only issue is that India has no capability, nor will it have any in the future nor is it planning to acquire any such capability to attack China in Tibet or elsewhere. Our sole intentions are to safeguard against future Chinese aggression.

This is long overdue. Our northern borders with China are very thinly held. I heard the other day on TV that the PLA has the capability of mobilising up to 250 infantry divisions against us (by virtue of improvements of road/rail/air communications in Tibet). Working on the thumb rule of a 9:1 numerical superiority needed for the attacker in the mountains, even 30 divisions on the LAC would barely suffice. That is of course the worst case scenario, in which PLA pulls out every thing from the Russian borders and deploys it against us. But even at a much lower threat level, an increment of a minimum of 5 to 6 divisions along with 20 -25 artillery regiments, engineer regiments, matching army aviation assets etc will give the LAC a troop density and fire power sufficiently capable of defending against a full scale assault by Chinese Army till such time the reserves can be inducted to restore the situation.

Therefore, the present proposed increments will just about scratch the surface. But, it is a beginning nevertheless. As long as the govt realises the seriousness of the Chinese threat, things will move.

1.) India have already inducted 35,000 troops for china + 90,000 planned = 1,25,000 NEW troops.

2.) Infrastructure projects like Rs 20,000 crore (US $ 5.5 billion) trans-Arunachal Highway project. Border roads & highways are being upgraded to 2-4 lanes. The every north east state will get rail link by 2016. Plus there are 8-10 airports projects near Tibet bordering states are underway.

3.) The para military forces are increasing their troops strength in huge numbers. As an estimate India is to increase para military forces (ITBP, CRPF, BSF, SSB etc.) by 90,000+. This will allow India to withdraw Army and relocate it to the chinese borders with ease-without any worry.

4.) Newly restructured Indian Army is more lean and mean (This plan is made by former Eastern command chief and current army chief Gen. VK Singh)

5.) India need to raise 2 strike crop (though its changed after new structure of army) against china + ICBM + SLBM + Anti Satellite weapons + more and more nukes.

the new training academy for officers seems part of this plan.

because we definitely need officers on large scale both for overcoming shortage and having sufficient officers on indo china border.

This is absolutely understandable as India needs to secure their own national defence.

To think China is worried about them is a bit overstated, but we are a bit cautious definitely.

Is that addition of 1,25,000 troops? I do not know if the govt sanction to increase the establishment of the IA by that many troops has been given. Or is it just pulling out troops from other sectors? Sanction for raising 2 additional infantry divisions had been received, that is what I heard, that amounts to about 30,000 men. We will not know till a break down of the increments reported on this thread are made available in terms of infantry divisions or artillery regiments etc. Inducting additional manpower is one thing but inducting additional weapon systems and equipment including vehicles is another thing.

2.) Infrastructure projects like Rs 20,000 crore (US $ 5.5 billion) trans-Arunachal Highway project. Border roads & highways are being upgraded to 2-4 lanes. The every north east state will get rail link by 2016. Plus there are 8-10 airports projects near Tibet bordering states are underway.
yes, these infrastructure projects are on. It will help the Army in side stepping forces from low threat areas to high threat areas once the enemy build up is identified. Reinforcing areas under attack will be easier.

That is OK, these PMF have a role to guard the borders against smugglers and illegal entrants in peace time and have zero role in wartime when they are pulled out.

5.) India need to raise 2 strike crop (though its changed after new structure of army) against china + ICBM + SLBM + Anti Satellite weapons + more and more nukes.
Nukes have no role to play in a conventional war with China. Our conventional Army has to be able to withstand a Chinese attack. Can we say that we will nuke the Chinese as soon as they attack, if they attack? That may come much later if the PLA threatens to overwhelm our defences and threaten major cities or population centers or cuts us off at our chicken's neck.[/QUOTE]

Ummmmm...that is just to increase the officer intake to offset the officer deficiency already existing. It is not China specific.
