India to conduct intelligence-based operations against Naxals - People's Daily Online
India Sunday said that the proposed offensive against the extreme left-wing Naxalites would be largely "intelligence based" and the security forces will adopt tactics used to tackle militancy in the operations.
"The para-military Border Security Force will hone the skills and tactics that were developed by it during the anti-militancy and counter-insurgency operations and adopt to the new conditions that they will face in the Naxal-affected areas.
"In these areas, operations have to be intelligence-based and (security forces) have to secure the support of the community and people living in those areas," Indian Home P. Chidambarm said.
According to official estimates, Naxals control about 165 of India's 602 districts. And, it is estimated that the Naxalites have 9,000 to 10,000 armed fighters, 6,500 firearms and 40,000 full-time cadres.
