NASAMS was jointly developed by Norway’s Kongsberg and Raytheon based on the latter company’s Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile. (Kongsberg)

NEW DELHI — India has quietly approved a plan to the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System-II through a government-to government deal with United States.

The moves comes before September 6 “2+2 dialogue” between defense and foreign ministers of India and United States here to bolster bilateral defense and strategic partnership.

The apex defense procurement body, Defense Acquisition Council, headed by Defense Minister Nirmarla Sitaraman, has approved the buy of hte NASAMS-II, manufactured by Kongsberg and Raytheon, at more than $1 billion, a Ministry of Defense official confirmed.

The new system will replace India’s aging Russian Pechora air defense systems that protect strategic assets and locations, said an Indian air force official.

If this program is approved by the U.S., the deal will be expedited through foreign military sales. India is expected to issue the letter of request by end of this year.

IAF official noted that NASAMS-II will have to be modified to India specific requirements and will integrated with the service’s integrated command & control system

That detective, is the right question.
It is the very core business question that the global arms industry aims to address.
If we all have nuclear weapons and in the case of India and Pakistan a 10-15 minute warning at best since we all have IRBM’s; we have no chance even if both sides had current anti ballistic missile systems.. yet.. we buy them.

We buy them because it increases saturation cost of each target thus stretching pak budget and necessity to maintain more and more warheads with its dodgy economy. Also eliminates rogue factor.

Not the NASAMS. And to actually increase saturation cost you would need the target to be further out rather than as close as it is. Its a fickle balance; technically IRBMs are easier to intercept than ICBMs but the warning time is much less as well.

You cant touch it as such in the boost phase unless its a S-400 sitting on the border for which there are plenty of nice countermeausres that suit Pakistan, you cant touch it mid course since neither PAD or AAD have enough saturation to get to ten different missiles with different paths, the only hope is during renentry and maneuvering warheads arent the easiest do go after. So you arent fighting saturation as much as pure distance.

Then all of this has to be accomplished within a time span of 7-15 minutes.

Israel shot down tochkas which are essentially powered artillery rounds. THAAD took down a single IRBM after a carefully scripted test. Even if its ten missiles aimed at Dehli, imagine the saturation need just to prevent an airburst.

NASAMS are more focused towards aircraft. Id love to see them work against a volley of some 30 warheads where only 2 are enough to do the damage.

Keep buying, still will have irradiated and roasted Indian flesh when all is done.
Interesting take. Roasted flesh you desire, that's what you will achieve.
The way I see it, this system is also mobile, giving a much wider cover and is more tactile that the Akash and Spyder to aid in other areas especially against as you said "aircrafts" specifically to protect a column. It also opens up the prospects of a Humvee mounted 64F1 version, which opens the doors for homegrown Vshorad systems for India which are not depended on 6x6 and 8x8 vulnerable command vehicles.

More than the roasting flesh business, this is to add robustness and shed weight of thrust engagement. But that's just me.

Roasting flesh is the business of a nuclear weapon, which as wrongly implied by the thread opener the NASAMS has nothing to do with.

It does if the nuke is mounted on a cruise missile. It'll deal with Baburs well enough. For IRBMs its upto S-400 close to borders and AAD/PDV combo. At least thats the plan.

It’s possible, since we have more intelligence on each other’s developments than most other nations combined.

It’s possible that intel was provided on the babur being used with a IRBM in a combo against vital targets.
