India to buy planes, tanks worth Rs 10,000 crores - Hindustan Times

The Tribune, Chandigarh, India - Nation

First I thought India is getting ready for WW3. Then I realized

1) The news is from last year.
2) Nowhere does it say India is buying 2000 tanks of the T-72 series or 1200 BMPs. That is the total number of the said vehicles in service presently in the IA. What the old news article says is that India will procure night vision kits for them.

@Aeronaut : Old news and misunderstood by the OP.

The IA is not going to buy any more T-72s and BMPs! Nowhere in the article does it mention that it will. It is only upgrading these assets in the short term and looking to have them replaced within the decade.

the Lisght Armoured Multi-purpose vehicles are for the SFs- I wonder what vehicle exactly they are talking about.

India isn't getting new T-72s..we're just going to buy Thermal Imagers for all T-72s as well as New T-90s.

^^ All three are repeating same statement, that India is not going to buy Russian tanks!
How do they know it for certain! and why not?

The T-72 and BMP are both OLD equipment that aren't in production anymore and the IA is actively looking for their REPLACEMENTS so it's obvious....

i talk in reference to T-90, which India is already buying.

India currently operates up to 620 T-90 which were procured in three separate orders

Russia operates 550 T-90A as of 2013

Yes India has already ordered around 2000 russian T-90 tanks and not T-72s. We are simply upgrading around our existing 2000 T-72s and 1500+ BMPs.

As far as T-90S/Ms are concerned, Indian Army operates 1050 of these tanks

They have been ordered in the following batches over the years

Initially contract for 310 "T-90S" signed in 2001. A contract, worth $800 million, was signed on 26 October 2006, for another 330 T-90M MBTs that were to be built with locally-sourced raw materials. A third contract, worth $1.23 billion, was signed in December 2007 for 347 upgraded T-90Ms, the bulk of which will be licence-assembled built by Heavy Vehicles Factory. The Indian Army would begin receiving its first T-90M main battle tank (MBT) in completely knocked-down condition from Russia's Nizhny Tagil-based Uralvagonzavod JSC by the end of 2009. In all, India plans to have 310 T-90S and 1,330 T-90M tanks in service by 2020 (total of 1,657 tanks with upgradation of night visions by 2020). Manufactured locally in India.

Rs10,000-crore purchase of 354 new T-90MS tanks for six tank regiments for the China border has been approved in September 2013. This takes total no. of T-90 tanks to 2011.

Initially India Planned to upgrade 1968 T-72M1 to T-72M2 , but it was reduced to 968 tanks and IA decided to go for 354 more T-90MS and also look for another 300 Light Tanks for the Mountain Divisions being raised
