There are billions of dollars in grants and soft loans on easy terms given to India each year...both are classified as aid. It's no different than aid to Pakistan or any other country.

I think everyone here wants you to cite every one of your assertions.

17% of US foreign aid is for South Asia
February 17, 2009 14:59 IST

South Asia accounts for nearly 17 per cent of the US foreign aid with a major chunk going to Afghanistan and Pakistan to support war on terror, a latest Congressional report has said.

India , whose economic powers has grown in leaps and bounds in the past one decade, does not figure in the top 15 recipients of the US foreign aid now.

A decade ago, in 1998, India with $138 million was ranked sixth in receiving foreign aid from the US. The list was topped by Israel ($3 billion) and Egypt [ Images ] ($2.1 billion).

Afghanistan and Pakistan – the two volatile regions in South Asia – were nowhere in top 15.

However, post 9/11, the two regions became major beneficiaries of US assistance as part of war against terrorism.

The latest figures available for the year 2008 has ranked Afghanistan second with nearly $2 billion aid while Pakistan with $738 million is placed at fifth position.

Israel with $2.3 billion continues to top the list.

"Since September 11, 2001, South Asia has emerged as a significant recipient of US assistance, rising from a four per cent share ten years ago to about 17 per cent FY2008, largely because of aid to Afghanistan and Pakistan," a Congressional report on US foreign aid said.

Are you suggesting that all foreign aid comes from the US?

If you are, then I am afraid you are wrong!

The fact is that the US foreign aid amount is among the smallest in the world...Japanese and Europeans, the biggest donors of aid to India, give far more aid than the US, as do IFIs like the World Bank which is giving billions of dollars of soft loans to India.

Its what you are saying but in your blog the link you provided there clearly states that its loans..How come a softloan be classified as AID? :what: AID is some thing which is not repaid and loan is some thing which should be repaid..soft loans terms and conditions will be more flexible and we get more time to repay it..I dont see how soft loan is conidered as an AID..

Thanks but no thanks ! Apart from money from the Japs, all other so called loans from IMF, World Bank, ADB, US, EU are euphemisms for money for control and there is nothing soft about it...India needs money for infrastructure development (which it is doing but trying to do it without depending on one source for it...eg FDI..like the Chinese)...India does get loans from EU and others but thats not just becoz we need it but also as its needed by the donor...

The fact is, the reason IMF, World bank and others start ranting the moment any country's fiscal deficit rises is really becoz the two main sources of funding are by printing money and creating internal public debt or external aid and/or FDI...The preffered one has to be printing money as it doesnt come with 1000 conditions relating to a countrys political, security future...ie it makes the borrower dependent on the donor eg Pakistan on the US...

Chinese chose the FDI route and thats why US and China are so co-dependent (basically China depends on US wrt Exports)...India always has gone in for the balanced option; some FDI and some public debt...and thats why (amongst other reasons) Obama is now so anti-India...(How India Gives Global Governance the Biggest Headache - By Barbara Crossette | Foreign Policy & Why India Is No Villain | Foreign Policy)....

so stop the brainless analysis....pls

India will remain the biggest recipient of Japan's official development assistance (ODA) in the near future.

Since Japan's first ODA to India in 1958, the country has received monetary aid worth Rs 89,500 crore (Rs 895 billion) so far, disclosed Noro Motoyoshi, Japanese consul general in Kolkata, at the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BNCCI), Kolkata.

This year the loan assistance to India was up by more than 18% compared to last year at Rs 6916 crore (Rs 69.16 billion).

Transport, environment, and energy will remain the thrust areas for Japanese assistance, he added. Kolkata has a huge potential to attract investments in the infrastructure sector, mainly in the form of joint ventures, Motoyoshi commented.

India tops ODA list

The definition of aid is the same for all nations, including India and Pakistan. AID INCLUDES GRANTS AND SOFT LOANS.

The official Japanese report does discriminate between grant and loan isnt it?

Dont you understand when u take a loan you have to have guarantee and repayment record and its like a investment for a issuer as well. Ask you again why 90% of assistance to pakistan is Grant?

Japan to provide $400m aid

TOKYO: Japan has resumed its Official Development Assistance (ODA) programme for Pakistan as four projects of the energy and infrastructure sectors are being processed on an urgent basis which will be provided around $400 million.

Earlier, the Japan International Cooperation Agency had stopped assistance for these projects after the donor’s conference as Tokyo included annual allocations under the ODA in the amount pledged by it at the moot.

Japan provided around $500 million annually for Pakistan under the ODA. In April 2009 at the Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) conference in Tokyo, it announced an assistance of $1 billion for Pakistan, but transferred ODA funds to that account.

In order to press the Japanese government to resume the ODA, Pakistan embassy officials held a series of meetings with the Japanese ministries of finance and foreign affairs.

Pakistan insisted that Japan should resume the ODA programme immediately which could make available funds for a large number of development projects, which were suffering badly due to unexpected break in funding. After much lobbying, Japanese officials agreed to resume the ODA programme and four projects in energy and infrastructure are being processed involving funding of approximately $400m. It is expected that a note of exchange would be signed by March 31, subject to meeting of all formalities by Pakistan and necessary approval from the Japanese government.

The four projects are National Transmission Lines and Grid Stations Strengthening Project; Rural Roads Construction Project (II) (Punjab); Rural Roads Construction Project (II) (NWFP) and GEPCO’s Transmission and Distribution System Improvement Project.
