India has set its sights on the 2019 Asian Games to be staged in New Delhi, a sporting spectacle it hopes will demonstrate the Narendra Modi-led NDA government's organising capabilities and restore the country's image spoiled by the scandal-ridden 2010 Commonwealth Games.

A successful bid and hosting of the Asian Games could boost the NDA's political standing and stand in stark contrast to the previous government's handling of the Commonwealth Games that was marked by shambolic preparations and corruption allegations against the organisers.

"We would be very happy if we can get to host the Games in 2019. At the moment we are waiting for the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to present us with the proposal. So let us see if it can be submitted in time," Sarbananda Sonowal, Union sports and youth affairs minister told HT.

Sources in IOA confirmed that there were plans to make a formal bid to host the Games in New Delhi, which has ready sports infrastructure built for the Commonwealth Games.

Vietnam quit as host of the 2019 Games in April, citing a lack of preparedness and concerned that holding the multi-sport event would not prove financially viable.

The Vietnamese government had said the state would be unable to raise funds for venues, urban infrastructure and facilities that would not be profitable in the years after the Games.

Within the next 20 days, the IOA has to present its proposal to the government, get it passed by the Prime Minister's Office and union cabinet before it can go ahead and place its bid before the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

The OCA has set July 1 as the deadline for countries interested in making a bid for the Games. Indonesia has said it was keen to step up as a replacement for Vietnam. Other likely bidders include Qatar and a probable joint bid by Malaysia and Singapore.

A final decision will be taken on September 20 during the next Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

Bids are auctioned eight years before the Games. Originally scheduled for 2018, the XVIII edition of the Games has been deferred by a year to move the Games to the year before the 2020 Summer Olympics.

New Delhi has held the Asian Games twice — the first edition in 1951 and the 9th edition in 1982.

A risky but Bold move by the govt.

NDA was given majority because it promised to undo the damage done by UPA-II. CWG fiasco has given a lot of -ve publicity to the country. A successful Asiad will definitely restore our image.

It is Indonesia who will hosting the games, IOC has indicated that. Just wait after our Presidencial elections be held in July

OCA officials feel that Indonesia is better prepared. But at the end of the day, it depends on which country got how many votes.

I agree that Indonesia start as the favorite. But India has a chance.

No point in showing off...... Use the money for some other purpose, that will be more effective, productive and useful

Not again !

If India does host the games, I hope its not in New Delhi.

It may not be to show off but a means to create jobs, boost infrastructure and all what the Govt wants to do.

Create job?? Yes (on short term)..... Infrastructure???? Yes..... But both can be done without a organizing a game...... And i feel that will be more productive than this.

Agreed.

Can you keep a Politician away from a chance to seek glory & publicity ?

Add to this the added point of ' see I did it better ".

Yeah the politicians (especially from our country) that is why i said in my first post.... " No need to show off"

I was watching some reports on Brazil's World cup....... The story is some what similar to that of our common wealth games (the only difference is I havent heard about versions of Kalmadi and Sheela), the infra is yet to get completed, and there were some serious accident in a bridge ( a metro i guess).... and usual cribbing by western media.....There were huge protests in the streets of Brazil, they were protesting against the expenditure of of 10 billion us dollars.....

There was a beautiful cartoon of a malnourished kid crying with fork and spoon in his and and a foot ball in his plate..... That summaries it..

Modi can use it as a big opportunity to build up infrastructure and economic activity, like we did with the Beijing Olympics.

Thats what he possibly intends to do.

It will be a project to show the nation how ' things are done' , serve to spur infra sales - Cement, steel etc, create jobs , improve roads , create / improve satellite townships, make stadiums , promote tourism ( hotel bookings).

All in all a win- win.

I am not sure why we are AFRAID to get out of our SOCIALIST mindset & get aggressive when it comes to our Economic Growth? These sort of games brings Tourism, bring lot of infrastructure in quick time, strengthens International standing & most importantly enthuse local people to play other sports then Cricket.

But many people call it just as a SHOW OFF!! No it is not, it is an OPPORTUNITY.

It is a good thing to do, in short or long term they had their own benefit. You can generate jobs, free advertisement about your country (that's the most valuable), and then you can boost your country confidence when facing against the whole world in International forum. South Korea, Japan, PRC, even meager country such as South Africa, all emerging to become world economic and geopolitic power after successfully held such games in their respective country.

Well the point made was simple, there are better ways to improve Economic Growth, Infrastructure. The money spend for conducting such an event also can be utilized for better things

The key word here is " Better"

'
Thats not free advertisement, you spend billions of dollar to do that.

No other city will be ready to host the games. Only Delhi has the necessary infrastructure
