India test-fires Prithvi-II missile

Bhubaneswar, Aug 25 (IANS) India Saturday successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile from a military base in Odisha, an official said.

The surface-to-surface missile with a range of 350 km was fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore district, about 230 km from here.

"The test was a 100 percent success," M.V.K.V. Prasad, director of the test range, told IANS.

Prithvi is India's first indigenously built ballistic missile. It is one of the five missiles being developed under the country's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

The missile, with a flight duration of 483 seconds reaching a peak altitude of 43.5 km, has the capability to carry a 500 kg warhead.

Prithvi, which has features to deceive anti-ballistic missiles, uses an advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring capabilities and reaches its target within a few metres of accuracy.

Good . I would like to figure out that the montly tests India is conduction actually has improvements or the same missile is fired again and again.

NEW DELHI: The tri-service Strategic Forces Command (SFC) conducted another successful test-firing of the nuclear-capable Prithvi-II ballistic missile, capable of a strike range of 350-km, from the integrated test range at Balasore in Odisha on Saturday morning.

"The surface-to-surface missile was tested at 11.05am and met all parameters laid down for the user-trial by the SFC in copy-book fashion. The launch was conducted as part of the ongoing training exercises by the armed forces and achieved a very high level of accuracy at the pre-defined impact point in Bay of Bengal," said a top official.

While the armed forces have been conducting regular trials of the Prithvi and Agni series of strategic missiles, they eagerly await the second test of India's most ambitious missile, the over 5,000-km Agni-V missile, which was tested for the first time in April. The three-stage Agni-V, about 50-tonne in weight and 17.5-metre tall, will bring the whole of China into its strike envelope once it becomes fully operational by about 2014-2015 after "four to five repeatable tests" and user trials.

The armed forces have so far inducted the Prithvi missiles as well as the higher range Agni-I (700-km), Agni-II (2,000-km) and Agni-III (3,000-km) missiles. The 3,500-km Agni-IV, in turn, was tested for the first time last November. The induction of the Agni-IV and Agni-V will add some much needed teeth to India's credible minimum nuclear deterrence posture against China.

Balasore: India on Saturday test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range off Odisha coast as part of a user trial by the Army.



"The sophisticated surface-to-surface missile was flight tested at around 1100 hours from a mobile launcher at ITR's launch complex-3 as part of an operational exercise,"defence sources said.



The test-fire of the short-range ballistic missile, which has already been inducted into the armed forces, was a user's trial conducted from the test range at Chandipur, about 15 km from Balasore.



The sleek missile is handled by the strategic force command, they said.



The trial was conducted in order to gauge the effectiveness of the weapon in a real time situation.



"The whole exercise was aimed at studying the control and guidance system of the missile besides providing training to the Army, which happens to be the user,"said an official.



The state-of-the-art missile, capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads, has a length of 9 metres and is one metre in diameter with liquid propulsion twin engine.



Prithvi, the first ballistic missile developed under the country's prestigious Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme has the capability to carry 500 kg of warheads with a strike range of 350 km.



The missile uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory.

if i am not wrong P 2 uses storable liquid fuel due to which missile can be stored for 10 to 15 days,right Spark?

Oh it has multiple injection noels. Interesting.. I thought missile would have exhausting noels just jet engines has. Or this missile a special case?

It has 2 liquid-fueled rocket engines, thats why.

By the way Minuteman III has 4 nozzles beneath a single solid-fueled rocket motor.

Missle Firings are done on older versions as training before shelf life of the missile is over. Certain new techs are tested on in production versions of missiles too.

Prithvi 1 and 2 is liquid fueled missile but Prithvi III is solid fueled one. At the time of conception solid fuel was not available in India. Its production started late 90's by ISRO. Till then all fuels were from Russia and russians were there to monitor the fuel and other techs supplied by them until the rocket was fired by ISRO. They made whatever possible to avoid india from developing those components.
