Agni-II missile successfully test fired

The Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army successfully test-fired Agni-II ballistic missile at 10.25 a.m. on Sunday. The missile lifted off from a mobile launcher on the Wheeler Island, off the Odisha coast and travelled its entire range of 2000 km before splashing into the sea. The Agni-II missile can carry nuclear warheads but in this mission it carried a dummy payload. The SFC is entrusted with the task of firing delivery systems that carry nuclear warheads.

Agni-II is 20 meters long and weighs 17 tonnes. It can carry a payload weighing one tonne. The missile has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Top brass of the DRDO were present on the Wheeler Island on Sunday when the SFC fired the Agni-II. The launch was part of a routine exercise. Agni-I, Agni-II and Agni-III missiles have already been inducted into the Army.

In the coming months, India plans to fire several missiles including Agni-I and Agni-III, Prithvi, Akash, Nag, Astra, Helina and Prahar.

Plans are afoot to launch Agni-V with a range of 5,000 km in June.
