Indian Missile Mistakenly Hit its Own Chopper in Conflict with Pakistan - Report

An Indian missile may have hit its own military helicopter on 27 February while trying to target 25 Pakistani fighter jets flying over its territory in retaliation to an Indian airstrike a day earlier in Pakistani territory to destroy alleged terror infrastructure.

New Delhi (Sputnik): India's air defence missile of Israeli-origin may have shot down its own Mi-17 V5 military chopper, following an alert on 27 February about 25 Pakistani fighter jets hovering over the border area that separates the two countries, reports the Indian daily The Economic Times.

The incident had occurred a day after the Indian Air Force (IAF) avenged the 14 February Pulwama militant attack by a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militant along the Jammu —Kashmir Highway on a CRPF troop convoy in which over 40 personnel were killed and many others left wounded.

The Mi-17 V5 helicopter lifted off from Srinagar airfield at 10:00 a.m. local time for a routine mission. The helicopter crashed around 10:10 a.m. near Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district. All six Indian Air force (IAF) personnel on board were killed in the crash, a leading Indian daily reported on Friday citing the initial report.

The investigation's focus is to determine "if multiple layers of safeguards meant to protect assets from friendly fire failed and how systems need to be improved to prevent any such incident in future", it reported.

The Indian authorities maintain that the IAF strike was carried out against suspected terror infrastructure operated by JeM, the Pakistan-based terrorist organisation that claimed responsibility for the Pulwama attack.

A day after the Indian side launched the air strike in Balakot (in Pakistan), the two nuclear armed nations engaged in an air clash, a first in five decades. According to reports, at least 25 fighter jets from the Pakistan Air Force tried to breach the border for a strike on military targets. A slow moving target like the Mi-17 V5 helicopter could be mistaken for a low flying armed UAV homing into an air base, said the media report citing sources.

The IAF has stated it wouldn't hesitate from initiating Court Martial proceedings against personnel found guilty in the inquiry.

I think it wasn't even mahem yet. Both countries have over patriotic populace ( politics keeps them this way to save itself from answering unfavourable questions) .
Civil population of both countries , except people residing on or near the border , have hardly seen any real war yet. Most conflicts between India and Pakistan have been called of for various reasons before bombs knocked on civilian doors.
I dont think that was the case here. It was DGP ISPR who said they have two Indian pilots with one in custody and other in hospital. They claimed, they downed two Indian jets and specifically called out, they have nothing to do with helicopter crash. This made Indian claim of downing F-16 even more legitimate, given we had only fighter missing. Having said that, logically it make sense that Indian copter crashed due to friendly fire which ultimately means that IAF lost two assets and almost 6 men in this operation. not a pretty figure, i must say!!

If this is what they do in a tiny air battle, I wonder what would they do in an all out war?
IAF should be more weary of its own air defence units

Does not matter how modern or advanced weapons India acquires, their operators act like blind-folded monkeys who would shoot indiscriminately at anything that moves

The funny thing is, When India sent another helicopter to recover the downed MI17v5, the Kashmiri crowd there started throwing stones at the incoming chopper. They had to fire at them and could only land after the crowd was dispersed.

Also according to Indian media from the crash site of the chopper, there were 5/6(don't remember exactly) people in the MI17, in which two bodies of Indians and of one unlucky Kashmiri were found on the crash site. The rest were missing and they were looking for them. According to my understanding, bodies being that much far away from crash site means mid air explosion. I still don't know what that chopper was doing.

Mistakes made during press brief from both sides , possibly to maintain one up manship both were too quick to jump to conclusions. Like initially it was declared mine17 fell due to technical fault but we know now,( although IAF is yet to officially acknowledge Sam hit) probably both sides made errors based on eye witness accounts . most eye witness claimed several parachutes ( white smoking, slower falling debris can look like parachute for sure to untrained eyes) .
India claimed to hit and down a PAF fighter and Paf claimed to down two jets. i am willing to believe them as soon as they showcase proof of their claims. Until then ,whats already available is what happened.

Good point, he recognized the pilot was Sikh because he had a beard. Surely the pilot wasn't wearing a turban. IAF pilots cannot have beards, but PAF pilots do have. Secondly he did show blood on his shirt which according to him was of that Sikh pilot. I hope he is recovering well in your Army hospital.

Just as IAF according some of the Indians, IAF pilots aren't allowed to have mustache.

And you are talking about people lynching their own pilot, who deceived Abhi Nan Dan by telling him that he is in India.

Investigations reveal that India's air defence missile of Israeli-origin have shot down its own Mi-17 V5 military chopper. First IAF missed the target as they used Israel made Spice 2000 and now they have shot down their own helicopter with another Israeli missile Spyder. Whether the israeli weapons are not up to the mark or the user is highly incompetent to use those is a point to ponder!
