NEW DELHI, October 9 (RIA Novosti) - India will discuss the modernization of the Russian-made Su-30MKI aircraft in service with its air force during an upcoming military-technical cooperation meeting in Moscow, the country's Defense Ministry said on Friday.

The Indian Air Force currently has 105 Su-30MKIs mainly deployed at airbases close to the Chinese border.

"The aircraft, contracted in 1996, are due for overhaul shortly and Russia has offered an upgrade of the aircraft with incorporation of the latest technologies during the major overhaul," the ministry said in a statement.

The IAF originally ordered 50 Su-30MKI aircraft from Russia in 1996 and an additional 40 planes in 2007. India's Hindustani Aeronautics (HAL) was also contracted to build 140 aircraft in India between 2003 and 2017 under a licensed production agreement.

India previously said it was satisfied with the performance of Russian Su-30MKI fighters and has recently expressed interest in buying another 50 Su-30MKIs.

The 9th meeting of the Russia-India Inter-Governmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation will be held on October 14-15 in Moscow and will be chaired by Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and his Indian counterpart A. K. Antony.

The main focus of discussions during the meeting will be the extension of the existing bilateral agreement on military-technical cooperation for another 10 years, from 2011 to 2020.

Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission sessions are held annually and alternate between New Delhi and Moscow.

The current cooperation program until 2010 comprises about 200 joint projects, including the modernization of the Vikramaditya aircraft carrier (formerly the Admiral Gorshkov) for the Indian navy, the transfer of technology for the licensed assembly of T-90 tanks in India, the production of BrahMos missiles and the purchase of Smerch MLRS by India.

Indian contributions

Advanced avionics were developed by DRDO under a project code named "Vetrivale" (a Tamil name for the victorious lance carried by the youthful Lord Karthikeya or Murugan, a son of Parvati and Shiva) in close collaboration with the PSUs and the IAF. Indian avionics have been received and acknowledged enthusiastically by the Russian principals.

The following are the components developed by Indian agencies:

Mission Computer cum Display Processor - MC-486 and DP-30MK (Defence Avionics Research Establishment - DARE)
Radar Computer - RC1 and RC2 (DARE)
Tarang Mk2 Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) + High Accuracy Direction Finding Module (HADF) (DARE
IFF-1410A - Identification Friend or Foe (IFF)
Integrated Communication suite INCOM 1210A (HAL)
Radar Altimeter - RAM-1701 (HAL)
Programmable Signal Processor (PSP) - (LRDE)
Multi Function Displays (MFD) - Samtel/DARE
The 32-bit Mission Computer performs mission-oriented computations, flight management, reconfiguration-cum-redundancy management and in-flight systems self-tests. In compliance with MIL-STD-1521 and 2167A standards, Ada language has been adopted for the mission computer's software. The other DARE-developed product, the Tarang Mk2 (Tranquil) radar warning receiver, is manufactured by state-owned BEL at its Bangalore facility.

These avionics equipment have also been certified for their airworthiness in meeting the demanding standards of Russian military aviation. The cumulative value of such indigenous avionic equipment is estimated to exceed Rs. 250 lakhs per aircraft. Since the core avionics were developed by a single agency (DRDO) - they have significant commonality of hardware and software amongst them using a modular approach to design. This obviously results in major cost and time savings in development; it also benefits the user in maintenance and spares inventories.

The DRDO has gone a step further and come out with a new design of the Core Avionics Computer (CAC) which can be used with a single module adaptation across many other aircraft platforms. Thus the CAC which is derived from the computers designed for the Su-30MKI will now be the centre piece of the avionics upgrades for the MiG-27 and Jaguar aircraft as well. The CAC was demonstrated by DRDO at the Aero India exhibition at Yelahanka and attracted a good deal of international attention. Taken together with the systems already developed indigenously for the LCA (such as the Digital Flight Control Computer and HUD), clearly Indian avionics have a significant export potential in the burgeoning global market for avionics modernisation.

The navigation/weapons systems from the various countries were integrated by Ramenskoye RPKB.

HAL will supply components to Irkut for 300 Su-30s meant for export to Malaysia and Algeria apart from those meant for IAF

"Certainly HAL will not produce all 140 aircraft in a single configuration standard, and we have reached a common viewpoint with the customer on how the aircraft shall be improved as production continues," says Su-30MKI chief designer Aleksandr Barkovsky. "From other programmes we know that we need to have a clear vision on how to maintain the aircraft's competitiveness well into the future.

So that means ,we right now have 105.By the time all are produced it will be 2017.Say the modernization deal is done by 2012,then all the aircrafts produced thereafter would come out in "mordernised form".Nice!

Mate it is not 2017 any more, its 2014. HAL is building new facilities to speed up production.

The upgrade will contain overhaul of the airframes, Bars AESA radar, S117 engines with and integration of Brahmos and Astra for sure, because these was stated in several reports and even official sites before.
Possible are new OLS 35, L-Band arrays in the wings from Russia, mixed Indian and western avionic pack, as well as RCS reductions with RAM coatings, or more composites.

Internal weapon bays was only tested at Su 47 AFAIK and that for Pak Fa, not for the older Flankers, so such an upgrade seems to be unlikely.

unfortunately its not gonna be that good for us. No AESA radar and no engine upgrade too. Its just gonna be an overhaul. At most could be some measures to reduce rcs.

Also Astra integration is underway as we speak. :angel:

As jagjit said, it most probably get Irbis PESA, new avionics, weapons and software as well as overhaul of airframe and engine. Thats it.

I beleive the targetting pod and jammers are Israeli. GPS receiver and hud are French, everything else is Russian and Indian, more important all of the major avionics Such as radar, OLS, and engines are Russian.

The SU-30 just like the SU-35bm can use PAK-FA technology, meaning most of the French and Israeli avionics won't be needed.

With regard to internal bays, that was a Force India article. No other publication has reported the same. Thus I would take that bit of news with a big bag of salt :disagree:

Do you say this because this article doesn't say anything about it? Actually it talks only about the overhaul of the older MKIs and don't even mention the integration of Brahmos, or did I misread it?

The fact is the the upgrade including the overhaul for the older airframes are under negotioation for quiet some time now. AK Antony was in Russia in oct last year and held talks, MMS was in Russia in dec and hold talks about it...and as I said these things are reported often before, or to some degree stated on official Russian sites, but of course it don't meant this will be the final decision:

The 117С engine is a deep thrust-life modernization of the AL-31FP, which will be installed on the latest Sukhoi Su-30/Su-30MKI aircraft.

Sukhoi upgrade on Antony Russia agenda

IN A move that will add even more teeth to its most modern fighter, the Indian Air Force is set to upgrade its fleet of Su-30MKI aircraft in a major modernisation effort that would give it a more powerful radar, newer avionics and better weapons, besides extending service life.

While the fighters are the newest in IAF’s inventory—they were bought in 1996—an upgrade to extend their capabilities will be discussed during Defence Minister A K Antony’s visit to Moscow next week for the ninth meeting of the India-Russia Inter Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation.

“The Russian side has offered an upgrade of the aircraft with incorporation of the latest technologies during the major overhaul and this will come up for discussion,” Defence Ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said.

The IAF is keen to get a more powerful radar for its fighters that will give it an increased detection range as well as the ability to fire longer range weapons. The IAF eventually wants the Su-30MKIs to have an Active Electonically Scanned Array radar, that is also one of the main requirements of the on going fighter trials to purchase 126 fighters.

Sukhoi upgrade on Antony Russia agenda


Efforts are underway to further enhance the BARS performance. Phase 1 upgrad¬ing efforts are supposed to:

• More than double the air target detection range.
• Increase the number of tracked and engaged targets 15 to 2 times.
• Double mapping performance as regards ground target detection range and resolution.
• Double the number of tracked ground targets.
• Add new operation modes in air-to-air and air-to-surface missions (particularly, Meteo, Active Counter-measures modes).
• Expand interaction with other avionics systems (ECM, EO target¬ing system, etc.).
• Extend the range of weapons.
• Enhance formation mission capabilities.
• Introduce service proposals. Implementing thesL> measures
will give the BARS tangible advan¬tages over radar systems installed both on current aircraft like F-15, F-16, F-18, etc. and their versions with respect to the transition to active electronically scanned arrays (AESA).
