India sends warship to Iraq to help stranded nationals​

India launched its first initiative for the possible evacuation of its nationals from war-torn Iraq with a powerful Delhi-class destroyer being despatched to the Persian Gulf by the navy.

The decision to launch the operation was given the go ahead at a meeting of the Crisis Management Group which was attended by the three service chiefs.

Sources said the warship would be in the region in a day and would wait for further orders from New Delhi. A parallel effort for air evacuation by the national carrier Air India is also being considered, they said.

The government swung into action to help stranded Indians amidst uncertainty over the fluid situation in Mosul, where 39 Indian construction workers are being held hostage by militants aligned with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

One of the major concerns about the possible evacuation of Indian nationals is that many people do not possess valid documents or have had their papers taken away by their employers, sources said.

It would be a daunting task to establish the identity of the people as many of them are currently living in conflict zones with workers from other South Asian countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan.

There are an estimated 10,000 Indians in Iraq though most of them are based in areas away from the swathes of territory captured by ISIS. Besides the 39 Indians kidnapped in Mosul, 46 nurses from Kerala are stranded in a hospital in Tikrit which too has been overrun by militants. The External Affairs Ministry has said that a little more than 100 Indians are in the conflict zones.

The Indian Navy already had a warship in the Gulf of Aden for anti-piracy operations. Sources said many warships of several countries like the US and Britain are in the Pursian Gulf because of oil interests.

The Indian Navy has experience of carrying out evacuations in the Gulf and it had won accolades for Operation Sukoon, conducted evacuate Indian, Sri Lankan and Nepalese nationals from the conflict zone during the 2006 Lebanon War.

A Delhi class destroyer of the Navy has been diverted and is expected to reach near the Iraq coastline tomorrow, the Navy informed the NCMC. The Delhi class warship has an on board sea-king helicopter and is being provided live feed via the satellite of the surrounding ocean and threats, if any.

Another warship, INS Tarkash, is doing patrol duties in the piracy-hit areas some 100 miles away and can be diverted, while two other warships on deployment in the Arabian Sea can be sent there.

Each of the ships can adjust a thousand-odd persons. The Navy had performed such a task when NATO forces led an attack on Libya in 2012. The possibility of using IAF's specialised heavy lift transport aircraft - the IL-76 and the C-17 - were discussed at the NCMC meeting today, sources said, but added that would need the permission of the ruling Iraqi dispensation for landing and taking off.

Also, the transporters will need some physical security en route and also on the ground. The IL-76 has its biggest base at Chandigarh while the C-17s are based at Hindon, 20 km east of Delhi.

Another possibility was to use road route to bring the Indians to safer destinations like Kuwait or Iran for onwards transportation.

It is a destroyer. Much larger than a frigate. Also, if it can reach there in one day from India, it can also come back in one day. Surely, IN would have packed it with enough medicine, food and water for these people.

why a fighting ship? India Navy don't have any other ship to do that like LHD or LPD?? Viraat may have accommodate more people and with heli they could have done it much better then a fighting ship.

True, but taking a tanker or even better the INS Jalashwa to the Persian gulf would have made more sense.

And I am sure that it will take time than one day to actually pick up everyone.
