NEW DELHI: India and Russia have inked a defence cooperation agreement, outlining the road for new acquisitions as well as fast pacing the ongoing projects, officials in the Defence Ministry said here. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his Russian counterpart signed the agreement in Moscow yesterday at the end of India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission for Military-Technical Cooperation meeting.
The agreement, is aimed at developing bilateral Russian-Indian relations in the military-technical field, said the MoD officials.
Mr Parrikar described Russia as India’s “privilege” strategic partner. The two sides understood to have finalised the biggest ever defence deal for acquiring S-400 anti-ballistic missile systems from Moscow at a cost of around Rs 70,000 crore.

The mega deal, along with an agreement to get another nuclear submarine, is likely to be formally signed during the visit to Russia of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who would be travelling to Moscow sometime in December for an annual summit with President Vladimir Putin.

New Delhi’s decision to go for S-400, which can kill an enemy missile from a range of 400 km, has come barely six months after the eastern neighbour China deciding to acquire six S-400 systems from Moscow, triggered a panic button in Taiwan, which held it as an aggressive posturing on part of Beijing.

“One S-400 system is capable of providing foolproof shield to an area in around 20 km of radius, for example high security Lutyens’ zone in capital,” said the sources, outlining the enormity of demand, that India needs to cater for in future, for such a missile system, which is said to the world’s most potent air defence system of the present time.

India, according to sources, also finalised a contract for acquiring another nuclear-powered submarine for ten years of lease from Moscow, which will also be signed Mr Modi’s visit.

“The sides positively assessed the progress of work on the design of a promising multifunctional fighter aircraft and a multi-purpose cargo aircraft, a licensed production of Su-30MKI fighters and T-90S tanks, the implementation of the program for the creation and production of BrahMos missiles,” the Russian press service said in a statement. Aakash is deployed in huge number. It is a 35 kms range SAM while S-400 has range of 400 kms.

70000 CRORES is 11 Billion Dollars

Wow. For your kind information China and Russia stuck a deal worth 3 billion for the Sam missile defense system. Which was considered as brutal threat against US and India. But now 11 billion worth of S400 is not just massive but huge massive of all massive deals ever!!! We can expect more than just S400. Russia might have offered systems developed for S500 to India. Which has prompted this aggressive shopping by Modi.

Unless we we make remaining parts for MKI in India it's gonna be a big hurdle in maintaining our huge fleet. India should insist on this regards with greater detail.

S400 is the necessity than luxury. It's already too little and too late. Blind sighted Congress rejected Joint venture Bramos like deal to develop s400. Think about it we face China and one hand. Who has large fleet fleet strength. On the other depleting strength of fighter squadrons. And we rejected this offer.

I liked the way the author has reported about Akula 12000 T. That's the way it should be calculated which Tonage when immersed in sea. Good

My fingers crossed for dark horse in this visit of our Patriots Modi and Parrikar. Which is deal for PakFa or else New stealth variant of Su35 S . Or even Su34 . All these are (again) necessary not a luxury against large country like China and power projection in Asian waters SCS IOR. With S34 our reach will have impact even in Pacific Ocean and EU. We are super power not a local player.

Am expecting some movement on TOT and Joint development improvement of Armata - Most advanced battle tank today or even till 2025...

India should get as many help as possible from Russia for SSN and SSGN. And Battle Ships with nuclear propulsion. All these are game changer which can Stand - Take punches - and deliver a final death blow to the enemy. We got huge role to play in destroying Chinese Navy. Only we can do and save this world

Our deal with Russia is still less compared to China. They won't need more than a dozen systems to reverse engineer the system and deploy thousands of them.

Sir, Aakash is a short range defense system, 25 KM for air bases , Su 400 has range of 400 KM, Lets not discuss LCA and Arjun here, you call me at my number, I will explain to you. (You should do some research before, you make comments other wise its just waste of time for every one)
