INS Arihant India’s first locally built nuclear submarine is just few weeks away from its reactor going critical (activated), once nuclear reactor goes critical INS Arihant will be ready for Sea Trials and later INS Arihant will be integrated with weapons for weapons trials.

According to sources close to idrw.org second Arihant-class nuclear submarine, to be named INS Aridaman is also shaping up and plans are to have launch by mid of next year, INS Aridaman will also be integrated soon with nuclear reactor, once launch takes place but still will require another two years before it is handed over to Indian navy for sea trials.

Work on Hull of still to be named third Arihant-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine has begun and launch is expected at the same time when INS Aridaman goes to sea trials , development of the third submarine will be at much faster rate than other two submarines since production will be stabilized by then .Displacing about 6,000 tonnes, the 112 metre-long Arihant-class of boomer submarines are powered by indigenously-built 80-MW nuclear power plants. Each submarine is said to store 12 K-15 missiles besides torpedoes and torpedo-launched cruise missiles.

Russian-built INS Chakra which has been leased from Russia for ten years has already been inducted into Indian navy and recent spotting of the Chinese nuclear submarine patrolling in Indian Ocean has prompted Indian navy to give serious thought on leasing a second nuclear submarine from Russia.

In 2003 India had planned to lease two Akula-class submarines, but agreed to lease only for a single Akula SSN, Russia after handing over INS Chakra to India have expressed their willingness to lease to India a second Nuclear Submarine but it is still unclear if the offer was of another Akula-class submarines or of Yasen-class submarine which is based on Akula class submarine but a new modern development , Russia has already inducted first lead submarine of Yasen-class submarine into its navy and are working on second submarine .

Thanks for info

. . .
if Indian navy is planning to lease another nuclear sub from Russia... Yasen-class submarine makes more sense to me. It also can carr P-800 Oniks so integrating BrahMos wont be a big deal.

AFAIK , Russia untill now has only one yasen class sub inducted .

There is provision to lease another Akula-2 class submarine for IN.
