India retaliates

Let me understand why do you think she was ill-treated as opposed to anyone accused of felony?

Beyond that, I think it is going to be a situation where India will do a tit-for-tat and all the "special" privileges revoked for the U.S officials. Even U.S officials in DC wouldn't have wanted this situation but I think their hands are tied when NY DA and NYPD want to act as per the laws.

It is not about how anyone else is treated. She is a diplomat & a representative of her country. U.S. authorities had to see permission from the state department to arrest her. Do they have to do that with the rest of the people accused of felony? This is not about the NY DA or the NYPD, this message is out from Washington. Even to those diplomats with limited immunity, the rules suggest arrest only in very serious crimes. Does this qualify? There is little point in arguing that others under similar charges are treated in a similar manner, that is the entire point of immunity & diplomatic personnel. They are not treated like the rest precisely because they are representatives of their country.

Btw, from TV reports, retaliation has already begun.

# All U.S. diplomats & consulate officials have been asked to hand back ID cards.
# All Airport passes for the U.S. embassy has been withdrawn.
# The U.S. has been asked to provide details of all the Indian staff that they employ along with details of what they pay them
# Same with domestic staff employed
# Visa details as well as bank accounts & salary slips of all those teachers who are working in U.S. embassy run schools (many don't have a work permit- usually spouses of U.S. diplomats) as well as Bank account details.
# Barricades outside the U.S. embassy have been ordered removed
#All Import clearances for the U.S. embassy stopped.

Indian diplomat in the US broke the US law, this isn't about illegal immigrant in the US.

And US broke international law!
We are protesting the treatment meted to a diplomat! U can arrest a diplomat after going to the embassy, talking, and slowly arrest her.
But arresting in public, handcuffing (broke vienna conventions), stripping is not normal procedure to a diplomat

She charge with a felony offense. Of course a criminal should be booked and housed in the same the same place with other criminal and drug addict.

It is easy to issue threats and act macho when they are not in power. Nothing of that sort will happen. Besides, I doubt if american diplomats are all openly gay and living with same sex partners in India.

India downgrades privileges of US diplomats

All airport passes for U.S. diplomats have been withdrawn; import clearances including that of liquor for the U.S. Embassy have been stopped
India on Tuesday reacted strongly to the arrest of its Deputy Consul-General in New York by initiating series of steps to strip U.S. diplomats and their families of privileges including withdrawing all airport passes and stopping import clearances for the embassy.

Asking all consulate personnel and their families to turn in their ID cards immediately, the government has also sought key information such as salaries paid to all Indian staff employed at the consulates and by consulate officers and families including as domestic helps.

“The government has asked for all U.S. Consulate personnel’s ID cards and that of their families immediately. These will now be downgraded on par with with what the U.S. provides to our consulates in U.S.,” sources said.

The government has asked the U.S. to provide it with visa information and other details of all teachers at US schools and pay and bank accounts of Indians in these schools.

Apart from these measures, the government has stopped all import clearances for the U.S. Embassy including for liquor.

Also, the traffic barricades near the U.S. Embassy on Nyaya Marg in New Delhi will be lifted except the picket.

Diplomat’s father meets Shinde

Ms. Devyani Khobragade’s father on Tuesday met Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde who said the needful will be done to provide justice to her.

“Yes, he met me. He told me everything about the incident. Immediately, I have spoken to the concerned people for action. She will get justice,” Mr. Shinde told reporters in New Delhi.

The Home Minister was speaking after Uttam Khobragade met him seeking his help for justice to her.

Mr. Shinde is a former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Mr. Uttam Khobragade is a retired official of the Maharashtra government.

Later, Mr. Uttam Khobragade said the Home Minister assured him government’s full support to Ms. Devyani Khobragade, a 1999 batch IFS officer.

He said the Union Home Minister told him that the government was with the family and the IFS officer has not done anything to be treated like that.

“What was done was absolutely atrocious and she was discharging government duty,” Mr. Uttam Khobragade said.

Mr. Uttam Khobragade said when Ms. Devyani Khobragade was arrested, she should have been treated with proper dignity.

Earlier story by our correspondent Sandeep Dikshit:
Turn in your IDs, India tells US diplomats

The row over the maltreatment of an Indian diplomat in New York has escalated with India asking all US consular officers in the country to turn in their identity cards that entitle them to diplomatic immunity and senior Congress leaders refusing to meet a visiting US Congressional delegation for the second straight day.

After Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar refused to meet the five US Congressmen on Monday, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde also declined to meet them in protests against handcuffing and strip search of the diplomat Devyani Khobragade over a contractual issue with her domestic help who had accompanied her from India.

National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon also did not meet the Congressmen on Monday while terming Dr. Khobragade's treatment as ‘despicable and barbaric.’ However, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid chose to meet the delegation and expressed his displeasure to them.

India has warned of reciprocal steps later in the day in order to ‘convey a clear message that this treatment of the diplomat is unacceptable
,’ said government sources handling the dispute. South Block has already hinted at several options. One of these is paying back in kind by examining the salary structures of Indian employees in the US embassy and whether social security payments were according to law.

If the US is still not contrite and refuses to arrive at ‘creative solutions’, the government might closely examine whether American diplomats are adhering to the spirit of each Indian law. As a senior Indian diplomat told The Hindu, “If you monetise the facilities we give to our home-workers, it adds to a decent sum. There is absolutely no hint of exploitation.’’

The US should accommodate that aspect, otherwise “We also know who all have brought in their gay partners and on what grounds they were given visas though there is a law against it in India. :omghaha:We can’t talk about it because this law is controversial and outdated but if the US wants to go to this extent, then this law and several other options are there,’’ said the officials.

But women's rights spokesperson Akhila Sivadas feels if the law has been infringed in the US, then the central government must step in to correct the situation by giving more allowances.

The directive asking all US consular officers posted in the country to turn in their identity cards means the government is trying to restore parity with its diplomats posted as consular officers in the US by stripping them of immunity in public life. Dr. Khobragade is also a consular officer and under US law, this post does not entitle her to full privileges, which has been a sore point with India. It has raised the issue several times but not very forcefully, said another senior diplomat.

Washington believes that the Indian Deputy Consul General has immunity from the jurisdiction of US courts only with respect to acts performed in the exercise of consular functions. But India says a diplomat can only be arrested for a grave crime.

India has more reason to feel incensed following the explanation offered by US authorities. “If arresting her in front of her children, strip searching her and locking her up with hardened criminals and sex workers was not bad enough, they are now saying that this was as per protocol when we clearly know this sort of treatment cant be applied to a diplomat for a non-heinous case,’’ said an official.

Dr. Khobragade was arrested last Thursday while she was dropping her daughter to school, handcuffed in public and later in the day released on a USD 2,50,000 bail. Following a complaint, the diplomat has been charged with accommodating false information about wages to be paid to her home-worker.

Police didn't strip her in front of her kids, she probably get body search and handcuff as it is the normal police procedure.

.
she was underpaid under the laws of u.s.but she "willfully" signed the contract agreement including the salaries and emoluments in india.if she felt that she was underpaid she would have not gone to u.s would she??nobody compelled her to work for the diplomat. what about the accomodation and food provided to the maid??even they incur some charges.we dont have to see everything in terms of cash.in any case an indian diplomat working in united states is not subjected to u.s laws.even so the deal is signed in india which means the indian courts are the "guardians" of justice for the maid not the american.

That the maid was underpaid is ONLY a CLAIM.

The maid shared a Luxury apartment with the Indian Ambassador. The Rent for a Luxury apartment in New York is around 4,000 $. That would mean that the Maid's share is 2,000 $ per month.

The food expense in new York is easily another 500 $ per month. A chauffeur driven car is another 100$ a day. That is easily around 2000$ a month.

Add that up along with her salary, the total CTC of the maid comes to 2,000$ + 500$ + 2000$ + 750$ = 5,250$ a month.

There is not even a prima facie evidence of labor exploitation.

Centre asks Delhi Police to remove barricades outside US Embassy, withdraws airport passes issued to US officials

New Delhi: Taking the US head on for meting out ‘barbaric’ treatment to Indian deputy Consul general in New York Devyani Khobragade, Indian authorities on Tuesday withdrew all airport passes for US diplomats - both from Embassy and Consulates.

The Indian authorities are also learnt to have asked Delhi Police to remove all barricades placed outside the US embassy, besides seeking details of Indian staff working in US Consul across offices across the country.

Earlier in the day, India has asked the US to return all ID cards issued to its consular officers posted here, even as Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde cancelled a meeting with visiting US Congressmen, ostensibly to protest the way India’s deputy consul general was humiliated in New York.

Last week, Khobragade, India’s deputy consul general in New York, was arrested and handcuffed in public allegedly because of false information furnished by her maid from India in her visa application.

In wake of the incident, speaker Meira Kumar and NSA Shivshankar Menon gave a snub to Congressional delegation from US, on Monday.

Besides, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had also refused to meet the MP delegation. Expressing solidarity with the woman diplomat, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) PM candidate Narendra Modi also rebuffed the delegation.

The visiting delegation was informed that the speaker will not receive them because of the treatment given to Khobragade.

India had also summoned US Ambassador Nancy Powell and issued a demarche.
In Washington also, the matter was taken up with the US government “forcefully” through the Indian mission.

Khobragade, 39, is an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1999 batch.

Could be normal procedure for ordinary people. For diplomats... rules of engagement is different than normal.

there is already a Media onsluaght on India by western Media....it cant get any worse

Are you kidding?
Compared to Pakistan, China and other countries, India is getting the warm fuzzies from the western media.

Anyway, it's unlikely India will arrest any gay American diplomats, so it doesn't matter.

.
She charge with a felony offense. Of course a criminal should be booked and housed in the same the same place with other criminal and drug addict.

Do you have issues with comprehension ? its an accusation which has absolutely no basis as the maid herself agreed with the conditions . Diplomats are too be treated under the Vienna convention ...now don't go full retard

.
:D though i liked the over-reaction or action according to different people.

But this is also interesting

"The US should accommodate that aspect, otherwise “We also know who all have brought in their gay partners and on what grounds they were given visas though there is a law against it in India. We can’t talk about it because this law is controversial and outdated but if the US wants to go to this extent, then this law and several other options are there,’’ said the officials."
