India refuses visa to German journalist for ‘hostile reporting’

By Iftikhar Gilani

NEW DELHI: The Indian government has refused visa to a German journalist apparently for “hostile reporting” of the November 26 Mumbai attacks.

German Weekly Der Spiegel had appointed Hasnain Kazim, a German journalist of Indian origin, its correspondent in India five months ago. Indian diplomats acknowledged verbally to German officials that they could not approve Kazim’s visa request, as his articles on India were “overly critical and biased”.

“We are dismayed to learn that the Indian authorities have again refused to issue a press visa to a journalist employed by a respected news organisation,” Paris-based world journalist group Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF) said in a statement. “Excuses have been made about the time needed to process the application but the reality is that the Indian government did not like some of this experienced journalist’s reports and wants to prevent him from returning to India,” the statement added. The organisation urged the Indian government to scrap its archaic practice of banning certain foreign journalists from visiting the country. Kazim wanted to move to New Delhi in May in order to set up there as the South Asia correspondent of both Spiegel Online and Der Spiegel. He previously visited India in November to cover the Mumbai attacks and wrote several articles that won him a nomination for the CNN Journalists Award 2009. Indian diplomats subsequently accused him of ‘hostile’ coverage. They also said his reporting from Mumbai had been ‘illegal’.

If he is hostile or anti-Indian, keep him out of India. And that should include even western heads of states or top diplomats. If he does not like India, why should he be welcome here? Let him go to countries he is fond of.

The issue and major problem here is these 'foreign' (and sometimes sellouts/traitors) are not "reporting news", rather "fabricating propaganda". This is a major issue of contention. :azn:

 4 year old thread..Get a life
The topic showed up under the rifile topic. And i found it quite interesting. It is very unusual in europe that critical journalists get not allowed visa.

If only I had a dime for every visa refusal by a European country. They have their reasons, we have ours..
Freedom of speech is a universial right and signal for an advanced society. But you have your culture and we have ours. So i don´t argue.

No one is holding him back from reporting what he wants. But we determine who is welcome in our home and who is not..

you should welcome critical journalists. I actually enjoy to read the articles of that journalist. He reporte much about this part of the world. He is not hostile but critical and thats something i see as positive. The last thing i want are journalists who report only good things. i want an informed picture about india. And for that we need a broad image. Good and bad. You think you generate a more positive image with denieing visa to german journalists? I don't know. As i said, its your country and i don't care how you run it.
