On the other hand, China's capacity if I am not wrong is already over 1200000 MW. Something to think about.

India's power generation capacity doubles to 2.34 lakh MW

NEW DELHI: The government on Monday said the country's installed power generation capacity has more than doubled to 2,34,600 MW in the past 10 years.

"India's power generation capacity 10 years ago (2004) was 1,12,700 MW, it has now risen to 2,34,600 MW," finance minister P Chidambaram said in the interim budget (2014-15) speech in Parliament on Monday.

He said over 29,000 MW of power generation capacity has been added in the current financial year alone.

Last week, power secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha said that the government is confident of adding 1,18,000 MW capacity by 2017. The target includes the shortfall in addition from the previous Plan period, the Planning Commission's current target of over 88,000 MW and nuclear and renewable power capacities.

He said the ministry was unable to achieve the previous plan period (2007-12) target of 78,577 MW due to fuel scarcity issues.

I consider Ralegan Siddhi as Anna Hazare's greatest achievement. Wish this were implemented in more villages. In my town, the local administration (Nagarpanchayat) has 5 wind turbines in addition to solar panels and the street lights installed since past , I think 2 or 3 yrs use solar energy.

Ralegan Siddhi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralegan Siddhi
(Marathi: राळेगण सिद्धी) is a village in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar District, Maharashtra state in western India. It is located at a distance of 87 km from Pune. The village has an area of 982.31 ha (1991). It is considered a model of environmental conservation. The village has carried out programs liketree planting, terracing to reduce soil erosion and digging canals to retain rainwater. For energy, the village uses solar power, biogas (some generated from thecommunity toilet) and a windmill.[1] The project is heralded as a sustainable model of a village republic.

The village's biggest accomplishment is in its use of non-conventional energy. For example, all the village street lights each have separate solar panels.[2] The village is headed by a Sarpanch who is the chief of the Gram Panchayat (village panchayat).
