India power generation capacity crosses 200,000 MW

Coal crunch and other negatives notwithstanding, India's power generation capacity has crossed another important benchmark of 2 lakh mega watt. The power ministry said that ''With the commissioning of a 660 MW unit of a power plant in Jhajjar, Haryana, the country's installed capacity has reached 2,00,287 MW

The capacity now comprises around 132,013 MW is coal based, 38,991 MW hydro power, 4,780 MW nuclear and 24,503 MW of renewable power.

The addition to the capacity during the last fiscal year (2011-12) alone stood at 20,501 MW capacity, of which 5,482 MW was added in March alone.

Power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that ''Power generation capacity is a challenge to the country if it has to achieve a 8% plus growth rate and hence a lot of emphasis was placed in the 11th Plan on the timely capacity addition.”

The 11th Plan, saw a capacity addition of 53,122 MW, in excess of two and a half times of the 21,180 MW added during the 10th Plan.

May be we can help our neighbors....as a good will gesture till they build their own capacity...

We need to build up our own capacity first...
power cut is still there in my state... And there are still some 250 -300 million indians without access for power...
OUr house must be corrected first, before we start helping others....

12% renewable energy, that's commendable. Hope they can increase this to around 15-20% by 2015.
Look at NaMo's innovative ideas, covering canals with solar panels, generate electricity and saving lakhs of litres of water everyday from evaporating...such initiatives should also be taken.....

First we should concentrate on powering up every small villages in India, then look forward to cutting the per unit cost even further. If any foreign country wants to import power from us, they'll have to pay a premium.

.
Can anyone explain whats the reason for the coal crunch? Are we producing less or running out of coal.

Agree with you but my point was that diplomacy, as a confidence building measure....we invested $2 billion in Afghanistan which we could have used to uplift our own people....

As far as villages are concerned, solar power units are the most viable source right now along with huge subsidy......its making great deal of change in rajasthan....

If they can afford to pay the premium, then i don't have any problem with that. Given that we are not an energy surplus nation, i don't find it as an appropriate time for 'confidence building measure'.

In short, "You don't give food to beggar when you're starving."

correctly put, though we are working to fix our house, we can not get away from responsibility of helping neighbours and poor country.

Enough coal is being produced, but not enough infrastructure for moving it out...
CIL is asking for more wagons from railways and railways are yet to respond.....

WOW just wow, that's incredible - there is still shortage to the tune of 20,000 MW which due to India's future investments will be taken care of.
I sincerely think we should sell some extra output to Pakistan - they are going through hell at the moment.

We dont have enough power for ourselves. Lets play the "charity" game AFTER resolving our own power issues.
In my state we still have to endure intermittent power cuts.

If i take them all together, it comes around to at least 45 minutes of power cut per day.
