India orders Army back from attack posts on Pak border?

Islamabad: India is likely to thin-out troops from wartime positions on the border with Pakistan, where they were deployed after the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, according to a media report today.

The two countries reached an understanding on withdrawing troops during President Asif Ali Zardari's visit to New Delhi on April 8, The Express Tribune quoted unnamed military and diplomatic officials as saying.

The withdrawal of troops to peacetime positions is among the first substantial overtures since the two sides resumed peace talks after a two year gap in the wake of the Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people.

A formal announcement about the withdrawal is likely when the Indian Prime Minister visits Islamabad, possibly during the latter half of this year.

"It is going to happen in September or October,"
an unnamed official told the daily.

Political figures privy to the President's day-long visit to India said the major development was a result of talks through backdoor channels, which had been active for the past couple of years.

Officials said the Indian government had mobilised troops to take wartime positions at the disputed border with Pakistan, particularly in Kashmir, immediately after terrorists launched the attacks in India's commercial hub of Mumbai. The attacks in Mumbai were blamed on the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba.

According to experts, in a wartime scenario, the regular army starts manning the border instead of special forces meant for protecting boundaries.

India has the Border Security Force and Pakistan has Rangers for this purpose.

Officials said Pakistan responded to the Indian move by sending troops to "concentration areas" or forward bases along the working boundary at Sialkot and some other locations.

A senior military official said that though troops were mobilised by India, there was no serious tension at the border like in 2002, after an attack on Indian parliament that was blamed on two Pakistan-based groups.

"There has never been an alert. Neither on our side nor on the other," said the military official.

Defence experts said any move by India will provide Pakistan space to deploy more troops in the north of the country, where the military is busy fighting Al Qaeda and the local Taliban.

The US and other Western states fighting the insurgency in Afghanistan too want Pakistan to curb terrorists on its soil.

Besides the withdrawal of troops, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh might have other "pleasant" surprises, the report said.

Officials said "major announcements" were expected on Siachen, the glacier known as world's highest battlefield, and the Sir Creek boundary dispute.

They said there is a possibly that both sides might agree on troop withdrawal from Siachen, where an avalanche buried 139 people at a high-altitude Pakistan Army camp on April 7.

Pakistan's civil and military leaders, including army chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, have said both countries should withdraw troops from the border to divert resources to development.

Pro pakistan and anti India Manmohan singh's latest step to harm India and its interests.:tdown:

If we can work out our disputes, I don't see why it would be a bad thing. You make it sound like there should be troop deployment at LoC and Siachen, pity, because it's not people like you who have to serve there. It's people like me and my Indian counterparts. Away from family, braving intense weather, thunder strikes, animal attacks, disease. Living in nothing more than crude stone and steel bunkers. All so that jingoistic chest thumpers like you can go around and have a good discussion? I call that sick.
If those men are being called back, that's great for them, our guys our already back so I couldn't care less what you do with your men, but being there and served against these people does induce a feeling of sympathy and respect in my heart.

and why its thumb down ? man take cold water and think like human . we can't gain anything even we stand up on borders 10000 years more then we have to back on table .good step both sides would windrow form more and more places so we can save lives and save money too .

1. Our dispute with pakistan can't be solved in this century because its based on the deadly cocktail of the hate, systematic brainwashing and myth of superiority.

2. If we get down from our positions in the Kashmir pakistan will surely occupy them. The peace thing is just a trick to fool us as they can't get them militarily.

3. If u don't believe me look at the several pact we have with pakistan shimla agreements etc. etc. pakitan don't follow them even a bit. We have returned 93,000 pakistani troops but they still have 54 of our POWs with them.

4. India always tried for peace, look at the traitor old vajpayee who have gone pakistan in a bus for peace but got back stabbed in Kargil is that our fault????

5. What more proof u need that pakistan don't want any peace at all????

1. I don't hate pakistan as its the enemy and its doing everything as one.

2. Fault is at our side we are sitting idle, we are not paying in same coin. RAW has been not used and even diplomatic pressure is switch off by manmohan singh.

3. And as for manmohan singh, i will worship him if he stop doing crap things. He is the murderers of farmers as 40,000 farmers suicides each year because of him (he have sucked the public investment from agriculture in 1992 on the order of USA/WB)

Not to forget he is pro pakistan and anti India.

As if the Indians love us? The hate is mutual, don't shove it down our throat as if you have been hated unilaterally for the last 64 years. As for brainwashing, No, I was not a part of the Hitler Youth, thus, no brainwashing.

2. If we get down from our positions in the Kashmir pakistan will surely occupy them. The peace thing is just a trick to fool us as they can't get them militarily.

A random poster on the internet is smarter than India's entire guild of policy makers? That represents for me. various causes of concern. Or you just don't know what you are talking about, I am more inclined to believe the latter.

Follow them? What was there to 'Follow' in the pacts? Kindly mention a clause that we have not 'followed'. Secondly, I could not find any information on those 54 PoWs, kindly post your link.

You guys invaded Siachen back in 1984, we were quite comfortable back then as well. It's just nascent strategics, so when we saw an opening in 1999, we grasped it. Though I believe both our nations are through with this phase and are acting as much more mature members of the International Community.

5. What more proof u need that pakistan don't want any peace at all????

You have yet to prove anything so, I do still need a LOT of proof. Though I have deduced from your post that you are intellectually immature as yet to understand subjects as complex as International Relations, Conflict Resolution and Diplomacy.

We should not do it.... never trust Pakistani politician they don't have clue about Pakistani Military or ISI Plans.... Again if there is something we need to spend millions to redeploy them...

We should move all our strike force close to borders if we are going to back to peace time..... We should keep Ample of ammunition if there is need it should last for atleast 7 days....

India has no plans of vacating siachen. It took a hell lot of training and expenses to make our forces capable of surviving and operating there. Now when the casualty rate is so low/null, why would anyone want to lose that degree of operational capabilities??

Not the same. Siachen was not marked out on the LoC & in any case moral outrage(not by you) is most overdone. Pakistan reached Siachen a couple of days after India, if you were caught by surprise, it would have take a whole lot longer to get there. We did what you too wanted to do. Be angry if you like but moral sermonising is not called for.

As for seeing an opening in Kargil & attempting to grab it, fair enough but after that don't expect anyone in India to trust the Pakistani army to keep their words. If you have no respect for a signed treaty, why should you have for one, signed or unsigned in Siachen? Nothing particularly special about Siachen, If troops no longer have winter breaks on the LoC after Kargil then no reason to rush for an arbitrary demilitarisation in Siachen.

I seriously doubt Manmohan Singh will just announce a withdrawal from Siachen without Pakistan agreeing to Indian demands. Neither he nor the Congress party is that stupid nor does the party have a death wish. Even if Manmohan Singh is somehow blinded by a search for a legacy or a wish for the no-balls pi$$ prize, his party will be in no tearing hurry to write their own epitaph. In any case, Manmohan Singh is no Vajpayee & his ability to do something dramatic is vastly overimagined. Just does not possess the clout, not anymore. If there was no attack in 2008 in Mumbai, I believe Manmohan Singh could have delivered something riding high on his winning a second term. Not now!

I am never disappointed by all the armchair heroes, from every country in the world, who is willing to fight to the last soldier.

1. If I am not wrong u must be a senior citizen?? near 60?? At old age people only think about nirvana, Vajpayee/manmohan have enjoyed their life fully and now in last leg they were for Nobel peace prize.

2. Why we should compromise?? Despite pakistan's every effort, Our economy is growing, military is becoming stronger day by day, we have Kashmir.

3. pakistan is in dire need of peace not us. Because of its internal feuds, extremism, dying economy.

4. If we stay away from pakistan and just watch the game everything will settle in our favor.

5. pakistan is talking peace just to gain positions it can't get through by force, war or terrorism.
