India needs to take stand against China: US professor.

WASHINGTON: India should respond strongly to China's growing assertiveness in South China Sea, an eminent Indian American professor has said.

"India needs to respond to China's claim to indisputable sovereignty over most of the South China Sea.. I would suggest that India should send its light squadron to the region and hold its main fleet obviously in reserve," Ved Nanda, Professor of International Law at the prestigious Denver University said.

"Today China considers India as a competitor and rival in Asia," Professor Nanda said in his remarks at a day-long conference on 'India-China Relations' organised by the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) over the weekend.

Referring to the territorial dispute in the South China Sea where it is seeking the entire territory as its own, Nanda said, "India needs to come up very strongly against China."

"Because of its ability to project its soft power, India, he argued, is in a much more favourable position than China or any other country in its own neighbourhood to have its own robust presence."

Nanda praised India for "not surrendering" to China on the passport issue.

Noting that India and China are close to mutual more cooperation than anything in past 50 years.

Glen Carle, ex deputy national director of CIA and author of 'Interrogator' said economic policies will prove crucial while shaping the future of the relations between the two countries.

Deputy Indian Ambassador to the US Arun K Singh noted the progress made by India and China in resolving their disputes over the past 50 years.

Noting that there is an enough opportunity for both to grow in Asia and in world, he said it is mutually beneficial for both to work together.

Both countries are working to develop a Asian Security Agreement, he said.

Ved Nanda is absolutely right. India must take on China in the South China Sea by sending naval fleet ready for showdown and also go for a permanent naval base there. It can only happen if the Govt gives green signal to the Indian Navy and Govt will only do that if the Govt comes under extreme public pressure. Indian people must mobilize themselves at every level to exert pressure on the Govt so that it can give the Go Ahead order to the Navy to ruthlessly engage China in the SCS. Public processions should be organized and the slogan should be "China, Get out of SCS" and "We Want War with China". Only then the Indian Navy will start action.

Ved Nanda did not touch upon the Tibet issue which I think is something that Chinese consider very sensitive and can be easily exploited by India. Here also Indian people have to put extreme pressure on the Govt asking the Govt to take steps like asking China to allow Indian observers be permanently posted in the troubled areas of Tibet failing which China would invite direct Indian military intervention. Indian parliament must issue a statement saying Tibet is no longer an internal issue of China and India has every right to go for military option if China does not allow Indian observers unconditional full access to Tibetan areas. Indian people should do things to make a public outcry so that the Govt gives green signal to the Indian army to move forward and oust the Chinese posts along the border.

Its not that India is not doing anything. On a different occasion, I already said what India is doing, though its not enough.

In India, people elect the politicians and if people build public pressure on the politicians, they will have to do what people want. Those Indians who always blame the politicians, should be asked if they themselves have done enough to encourage the politicians to take military actions against China. Indians should go to the parliament, make processions holding banners which should say "Tibet belongs to India" as well as with maps which show Tibet as an Indian territory. These are the steps which will encourage the politicians to come out of the hesitation and take a bold stand. Everywhere, in schools, colleges, universities, bazaars and in all public forums, volunteers and NGOs should teach the people that Tibet is an integral part of India and India must get its land back. In front of the Chinese embassy, posters, banners, pamphlets describing Tibet as India should be displayed. This is Indian people can do and for this Indians don't need politicians.

India is struggling to keep the land you already have from separatist groups and you want to steal more land? That's some good weed you're smoking bro.

We need comments from our expert in strategic affair @SinoChallenger.
