LONDON: India has earned the dubious distinction of being South Asia's most uncharitable country in 2011, if one goes by the ranking in the Charities Aid Foundation's World Giving Index. In the South Asia region, India is the worst performer with a global ranking of 91. In 2010, India ranked at 134.

Pakistan, which was ranked at 142 last year, has made it to 34th position this year. Sri Lanka is ranked 8th while Bangladesh is 78 and Nepal 84.

Thailand was the most generous, with 85 per cent of Thais making regular charitable contributions. The UK was the second most generous, with 79 per cent regularly giving to charity.

Countries were ranked on monetary donations and charitable acts.

Sri Lanka has been rated the world’s eighth most charitable country in the world

Sri Lanka has been rated the world’s eighth most charitable country in the world`. It retained its position from last year in a study of 153 nations carried out by the Charities Aid Foundation.

Sri Lanka was named the country with third highest percentage of population claiming to ‘volunteer time’ at 46%.

The U.S. came top of the World Giving Index 2011 – which ranks nations based on how likely citizens are to donate money, volunteer their time and help strangers – followed by Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

The Netherlands was sixth, with the top ten completed by Canada, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Laos.

Worldwide there was a 2 per cent increase in people helping strangers and a 1 per cent increase in volunteering over the past 12 months, but a 1 per cent drop in giving to charity, the study based on Gallup polling data discovered.

Jeez thats quite the jump for Pakistan.

Probably has to do with natural disaster.

Oh? Let's see...

India has proposes to dole out $11 billion in economic aid via a new agency under the aegis of the Ministry of External Affairs .

Charity begins at home, but the compulsions of becoming an emerging power means that you need to start spreading the wealth outside of your doorstep. Or, at least such has been the thinking that some people say is the real reason underlying why countries dole out economic aid.

And so, the Ministry of External Affairs recently announced the creation of an Indian Agency for Partnership in Development (IAPD), forged in the image of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) or the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), and is likely to distribute around $11 billion to the LDCs, particularly African countries, in the next four to five years.

India has more than 140 lines of credit (LoC) to 74 countries. Last year Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced $5.8 billion worth of LoC to Africa for infrastructure development. India also includes programmes like Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Program (ITEC), the Special Commonwealth Assistance for Africa Program (SCAAP) and the Technical Cooperation Scheme (TCS) under the Colombo Plan. Main beneficiaries of ITEC were Bhutan, Afghanistan , Nepal, Africa, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Eurasian Countries, Maldives and Bangladesh on which more than $10 billion have been spent.

And then don't forget the $20 million given to Pakistan as flood relief aid through the UN!

Cheers!

. . .
Charity ?

There are enough charities operating in India through somany religious orgnisations.

It is strange that western nations score on charity while seeking bail outs alongside.

lol
because Pakistan refuse to take ny aid frm india, cz we know the sitution in their own country & we dont want the money which is more required in india for poors....& pakistan also give so much aid & peace forces for UN & every country gives them even bangladesh & bhutan give Aid through UN. so not a big deal u hav to give them if u want them to help u in ur worst time....
so stop this BS that india is giving so much aid:D

.
Is this also take into account the amount of money that Indians donate to various religious establishments throughout India. Sree Balaji Temple in Thirupati alone fetch close to 2 million dollars in donations every month from devotees.

Plz check properly our aid might be among this one...!!!
:smokin:

And about charity. Its something different in our country. Bocz our countries is being run by economist. They try to teach people to catch fish rather giving fish. Same with china. I look at it like this, poor countries who have huge poverty tends to give their people charity. But there are some countries in this world beg other countries to give charity. don't know whether they use the begged money for people or for military. Hope Pakistan is not one among them...!!!

And what about our stupid favourite charity of giving money to beggers
