India misses out on world uni rankings

They might taken account of students quality rather than quality of a communist in those universities ;) . Its the sad part that IIT's and IIM's are leaching up the best talent in our country, it wasn't socialist India anymore where parents used to encourage their children to take up liberal arts. I think that situation will change slowly.

Jawaharlal Nehru University makes it to top 100 in world university rankings

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has made it to the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings this year. QS, for the first time, has released a subject-wise list in which the English department of JNU — Centre for English Studies — has been ranked among the top 100 English departments in the world. Apart from the English department , JNU's departments of geography and area studies, and politics and international studies too, have found a place in the top 100.

Saugata Bhaduri, chairperson, centre for English studies (CES), school of language, literature and culture studies, JNU, says, "Though JNU has been rated as one of the top 100 universities of the world in the past, it is for the first time that the agency has considered individual departments around the world. I am proud that CES has been ranked in the bracket of 51-100 ."

Having achieved this position of standing as one of the top departments in the world, Bhaduri is eager to sustain this position in future too. "I feel that we have to face immense challenges to upgrade to higher levels in the coming lists."

This neck-to-neck competition between the US and the UK is not replicated when India’s performance is compared with other Asian countries. While India is yet to secure a place in the top 200, other Asian countries such as China, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan sit comfortably among the Top 100 of the rankings table, led by University of Hong Kong (22) and University of Tokyo (25).

The University of Hong Kong keeps its title as #1 in Asia, beating out the University of Tokyo again.

Though it's nothing to boast about, when the US and the UK still dominate the top rankings.

The QS world university rankings are a terrible indicator of university performance. Rankings in general are baised towards the universities of the nations they are produced in. But QS rankings have shown massive year to year fluctuation in university rank that make them highly unreliable.
Whether Indian universities show up in such ranks, and in this list in particular is of no importance. Rankings and other forms of recognition are usually lagging indicators. If the Indian economy keeps growing and the focus on education remains strong, the high rankings will obviously follow...either way, they will make little difference to either the universities or the their students, both of whom will have known how great the school is for years.
