India may launch Iranian satellite

I am not against the balancing act of the GoI...I am for it...just that by refusing to function as an ally of Iran...again and again we fail to balance things out.

I guess we all are saying the same things..However we disagree on the approach and pace GOI is working...I rest my case with the above quotes of Paritosh...GOI should do a better job in balancing.... here is an interesting link...

what you say is just the exactly opposite, from most part of your post i did see you want to libel and undermine the china pak relationship, the facts you provided can actually be decoded in another way which is more convincing, the simple truth you have to know is that china was not that powerful at that time and you have to consider her internal uproars during that unstable period before she can be described by you to be the likes of any other dominating hegemonic powers in this world......

Though a little old news but thought of posting it here....Though i am glad that some sort of balancing can be seen here...

Vote should not detract from dialogue: India

India has justified its vote against Iran at Friday’s meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the suspicion of the country having reported late the building of a secret nuclear enrichment near the holy city of Qom. At the same time, India said its action, resulting from the IAEA report, should not detract from the need for dialogue on the whole issue.

In an unusually elucidatory statement that comes weeks after high-level talks between Iran and India after a long time, the Foreign Office here explained that in recent months, New Delhi was encouraged by the “new pathways of engagement” that opened up with Tehran including the recent meetings in Geneva and Vienna which gave rise to hopes of constructive and productive results.

Therefore, India did not think its vote, along with that of China and Russia, would divert the parties away from dialogue.

“This resolution cannot be the basis of a renewed punitive approach or new sanctions. In fact, the coming weeks should be used by all concerned to expand the diplomatic space to satisfactorily address all outstanding issues. India firmly supports keeping the door open for dialogue and avoidance of confrontation,” the Foreign Office said.

“The Indian delegation had taken careful note of the report of the DG [IAEA Director-General ElBaradei] on the Implementation of the NPT [Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty] Safeguards Agreement and Relevant Provisions of Security Council Resolutions in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In his report, the DG has noted that while the Agency has continued to verify non-diversion of declared nuclear material in Iran, there has, however, been no movement on remaining issues of concern which need to be clarified for the Agency to verify the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme,” the statement added.

‘Inconsistent’

“The DG concluded that Iran’s failure to notify the Agency of the existence of this facility until September 2009, rather than as soon as the decision to construct it or to authorise construction was taken, was inconsistent with its obligations under the Subsidiary Arrangements to its Safeguards Agreement, and that Iran’s late declaration of the new facility reduces confidence in the absence of other nuclear facilities under construction in Iran which have not been declared to the Agency,” the Foreign Office said.

It maintained India’s consistent support for the right of all states to peaceful uses of nuclear energy along with their committed obligations. But in Iran’s case - which is a signatory to the NPT - it has all the rights and obligations, but it must undertake the full and effective implementation of all safeguards obligations under taken by IAEA member-states.

India proposes to invest $6.5 billion in Iran gas fields

India on Monday proposed to invest $6.5 billion to develop gas fields in Iran and sought more liquefied natural gas (LNG) from that country.

At the same time, India asked Iran to honour the 2005 LNG import deal and ensure secured supplies of gas through the Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline.

In the first high-level contact in two years, India told the visiting Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and National Iranian Oil Co (NIOC) Managing Director, Seifollah Jashnsaz, that it was keen to buy 5 million tonnes of LNG a year besides the ones signed in 2005, sources said.

India also asked Iran to give the ONGC Videsh-led group rights to develop the gas field it discovered in the offshore Farsi block. It sought 20-25 per cent stake for the overseas investment arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) in the Phase-12 of the gigantic South Pars gas field in the Gulf.

Sources said Jashnsaz was told to honour the 2005 LNG agreement which NIOC had previously blocked, saying the gas price in the signed deal was too low.

On the $7.4 billion Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, India said it was willing to be part of the project provided Iran guarantees safety of the pipeline in Pakistan.

India said it would take delivery of the gas on the Pakistan-India border rather than the proposed sale point at the Iran-Pakistan border, sources said, adding this way Iran would be responsible for passage of gas in Pakistan and will have to bear losses if the pipeline is disrupted.

Though a little off topic but i was under the impression that we are not moving forward for IPI gasline...However this article seems to suggest otherwise(see the bolded part)...Any thoughts??

In a bid to revive the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project, India will next week specify dates for restarting dialogue between the three nations, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister Seifollah Jashnsaz said.

“(Petroleum Minister) Murli Deora has promised that by next week India will specify dates for holding trilateral talks,” he said.

The trilateral ministerial-level meeting, the first in over two years since India boycotted talks over gas supply issues, is likely to be held in December.

“Mr. Deora will suggest dates for holding the trilateral meeting in New Delhi in December,” Mr. Jashnsaz, who met Mr. Deora on Monday, said.

India last attended a trilateral ministerial meeting on the project in 2007 and has not even held any bilateral dialogue in the past 18-months. India wants Iran to guarantee safe delivery of the gas through Pakistan and is also upset at the frequent changes Tehran has made in the gas price.

Iran, which had originally priced its gas at $3.2 per mmBtu, had in 2007 revised the rates to $4.93 per mmBtu at $60 a barrel crude oil, which was accepted by India.

He said Iran has now changed the formulation that would mean India paying $8.3 per mmBtu at oil price of $60 a barrel.

Added to this would be a minimum of $1.1-1.2 per mmBtu towards transportation cost and transit fee that India would have to pay for wheeling the gas through Pakistan, he said.

The official said India has rejected the changes as unilateral revisions was against the spirit of stable contract regime.

Issues like frequent revisions in prices and terms made by Iran have delayed finalisation of the agreement on the IPI pipeline, which should have become operational in 2010 if things would have gone as agreed in 2005.

Iran was not willing to commit to a supply-or-pay regime wherein it would have to be held accountable for non-delivery of gas at the Indian border. It, however, wants New Delhi to commit to a strict take-or-pay clause wherein India would have to pay even if it does not take deliveries

@ Members

All those who were saying that India came out of IPI gas pipeline project due to US pressure can take a chill-pill and read the bolded part....Some of the reasons that might make sense to them for indian reluctance...

This specific line make most sense to me

Iran was not willing to commit to a supply-or-pay regime wherein it would have to be held accountable for non-delivery of gas at the Indian border

India should ensure that this clause is accepted if she is going for such a project...This will ensure that Iran will have to bear losses in case pipeline is disrupted during any conflict or terrorist strike on Pakistani Side...This will surely piss of Iran and in turn risk the supply for Pakistan as well....

Why cant we just secretely launch the satellite. Secretly in the sense that no one can actually know which satellite we are launcing. With the pretext of launching some nano satellites for some research purposes , we can well launch this one.

. .
Does Iran has any satellite now ?

India should launch Iran satellite if it does not harm Israel.

And there nothing that Iran can do that can 'harm' the mighty Americans.

Iran is very close to achieving controlled Nuclear Fission.
When it does making an A-BOMB becomes a trivial matter in comparison.

when that happens Iran will have the Capability to strike at all American bases in the Middle east. Decimate any American Invasion force. And pose a serious threat to its authority in the region.

In other words its bringing a gun to a fist fight, suddenly people dont want to fight any more.

The US war mongers cant have their way with Iran as they did with Iraq.

Hey gogbot...I kind of doubt that...I read some news recently where it was stated that Iran has achieved uranium enrichment to 3.5% whereas for a bomb you need somewhat 90%......Considering what US did in Iraq(even though they had no WMD) and add Israel to the equation gives me another reason to doubt that...

I would appreciate if you can shed more details..

P.S: I don't have much knowledge in nuclear technology so please bear with me if my comment sounds kiddish :)

I dont understand, whats the harm if a civilian satellite for telecommunications is launched.

The only thing is - it would symbolize an open support of Iranian Aggressive Policies which West wont like and feel offended by the Indian launch.
