India "may" buy more SU-30 Mki's instead of Rafale

I second that,
if the same amount of money is invested on indigenous platform, the results would be much more feasible.
Kinda said this that if we put 50% of that in AMCA and the rest in Tejas Mk2, we'll have a spanking new fighter fleet in a decade.

Rafale Deal: Ball is in France’s court, says India

The multi—billion dollar Rafale fighter jet contract with France has run into rough weather over a guarantee clause and steep rise in price with India making it clear that the ball is in France’s court as it looks at the option of buying more Russian Sukhoi—30 MKI warplanes as a back—up plan.

The multi—billion dollar Rafale fighter jet contract with France has run into rough weather over a guarantee clause and steep rise in price with India making it clear that the ball is in France’s court as it looks at the option of buying more Russian Sukhoi—30 MKI warplanes as a back—up plan.

India is insisting that Dassault Aviation, which manufactures Rafale, cannot renege on the Request for Proposal (RFP) clauses, which it had initially agreed to.

The situation has come to such a level that France has been forced to send an empowered delegation later this month to “solve all remaining issues” to salvage the contract.

A top Defence Ministry official here had this week admitted that there were problems and said India could consider buying more Russian—made Sukhoi—30 planes if the proposed deal with France collapsed.

Recalling the last month’s meeting between Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his French counterpart, sources said French “were told categorically to stick to the RFP”.

“The ball is in France’s court,” the sources said adding that if the “RFP is adhered to, the deal can be wrapped up soon”.

They claimed that while the deal was initially for about Rs. 42,000 crore, French are seeking a higher price now. This, the sources said, has put the price at a “little more than double the cost”.

Dassault did not comment on queries sent by PTI to it.

The French Rafale and European Eurofighter Typhoon were the only one left standing after years of tests on technical and other aspects.

“Rafale was selected in 2012 since it was the lowest bidder. The difference in cost with the second bidder was razor thin. With cost now more than double, how can it be the lowest bidder,” the sources said, explaining why the negotiation for a final contract has been taking so much time.

Another point of contention is the guarantee clause under which Rafale has to stand guarantee for the planes that would be manufactured by state-owned HAL.

As per the RFP issued in 2007, the first 18 jets are to be imported and the rest 108 manufactured under licence by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).

Amazing level of blackmailing. So the French should sell the fighters for the price quoted two years earlier. Even a small time merchant wont sell you goods on a two years old price and here we are talking about state-of-art fighter jet system.
Hi,

The price negotiations are based on the base price irrespective of the inflation. The dollar value fluctuations and collapse of Indian Rupees are kept in mind for the price negotiations. One of the things you should note that Dassault Breguet is notorious when it comes to price negotiations, even the french government is upset about the DB's high handedness when it comes to price negotiations. Indian MMRCA order is the lynch pin for survival of rafale as globally viable platform, it is also dassault's due diligence to ensure to provide the best possible pricing solution. What Indian establishment is doing is nothing new, I have been involved in a few capital equipment procurement projects which is in similar realm, and every customer will fight tooth and nail to get pricing an service concessions especially asian and south american customers. India is no different as a customer.

How many threads are on this?

In either case, the issue here is NOT the level of sophistication of the fighters but the greater reliability and lower operating costs of the Rafale. Can India afford to have 300+ MKI with all their associated lifecycle costs?
Tax payers Inc.....

Not just that. Dassault should take full responsibility & ownership of all problems due to low standard work of HAL.

India really lives in a fantasy world in which ancient Indians created planes!!
I dont think you get the concept of ToT productions. The EL testers, supplier quality, and QC protocols comes with the ToT... But then again I wouldn't expect you to know any of that, you are here to flame, without knowing a damn thing about mfg

Serge Dassault CEO of Dassault is worth over $13bn he can play hardball the commercial arm of Dassault is doing pretty good! and if Qatar buys some Rafales they will not reduce the price just because of pressure from the French and Indian govt.

It brings no advantage to the IAf, that MKI won't bring with it's mid life retrofit. MKI will get composite main spar, Aesa radar.

I wonder how long it would take for the the Indian media to twist the words of the DM. What the DM said was hardly ground breaking or all that significant and we have heard this news before (other available and the Dassualt side need to adhere to the RFP or the deal will not progress).

Nothing new here, not even worth discussing really. The deal is still on and will be signed within a few months IMHO.

India should forget about RAFALE. Doubling the price should be outside the condition for continuing negotiation. India should ask France to come up with a serious price first before sitting down.

Do you think Dassault had learned something from the Russian carrier deal?
