I think you have hit the nail on the head there....israel would feel that a Islamic bomb would be a threat to it.

They wanted to pre-empt it.

Israel was afraid bcoz she knew the only country she will have trouble with in future is Pakistan so they wanted to settle it up.

I beg to differ!

FYI! Israel has been at DIRECT war with Arab states: Syria, Egypt, and Jordan. PLO / Hamas / Hizbullah are non-state entities who has been at DIRECT war with Israel.

Jordan was always reluctant to go to war and after 1967, they quit being at war with Israel.

So after 1967 the following entities stand out in Arab-Israeli conflict:

1. Egypt - a state at DIRECT war with Israel
2. Syria - a state at DIRECT war with Israel
3. PLO - non-state at war with Israel
4. Iraq - a state at INDIRECT war with Israel
5. Lebanon - state that collapsed and was used by PLO to fight Israel.

Let's see if any of these states or entities were even close to Pakistan. The answer is big fat NO!

In fact all these 5 states or entities were in cahoots with India.

After 1973 Egypt also quit being in a state of war against Israel.

So Kidwai sahib, Israel was not worried about us giving anything to Syria or PLO or Iraq.

Yeap. That's true. Libya used to be one of the "indirect" phadaybaz (quarrelsome) in the Middle East.

And yes I agree that there "is" no threat to Pakistan from Israel.

Fatman I can assure you there was.......I have heard this from high ranking officals who were "on the spot" that there was a clear and present danger. And that action was required.

I am not someone (unlike quite a few people) who has a pathological capacity to blame Israel for everything from the small pox to the common cold. But in this case there is truth in what is being said. Some of the details are incorrect however the general story is true.

Actully Keys has made a very astute observation. Mossad in the 1970 and 80's assasinated several European and Canadian citizens who were officially working in Syria and Iraq on military projects which they felt would jeopradise Israel's security. A very interesting case was the murder of G Bull who was an canadian artillary expert working on building a super gun for Iraq. Please google Project Babylon and G Bull and read the story. I am posting one such link.

Best Regards

Project Babylon was a project allegedly commissioned by the Iraqi president Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War to build a series of superguns. The design was based on research from the 60s Project HARP led by the Canadian artillery expert Gerald Bull. Although the details are sketchy, it appears that there were four different devices in total included in the program.

The project was supposedly halted in 1990 after Gerald Bull was assassinated and parts of the superguns were allegedly seized in transit around Europe. However, during the 1991 Gulf War the UK Government announced that the parts it had seized were oil pipes and not parts for a gun, as Iraq had claimed throughout. The remaining components in Iraq were allegedly destroyed by the United Nations after the 1991 Gulf War.

Keys - i am sure your info is authentic but the general Israeli position always has been that Pakistan was not in their sphere of influence whereby pak nukes were considered a threat to them. our nukes as u well know are pointed eastwards.
