They just need more dustbins on the platforms I think.

Watch this video and find out what Indians did to their brand new passenger train. It's disgusting and shows you that they have no pride. No amount of dustbins or automatic cleaning machines will help when the people have such filthy habits.

Bigger one and automatic cleaning machines

And I think they need to buy some washing machines...

Govt: Railway blankets washed once in two months

Ever wondered why the blankets provided by the Indian railways during train journey stink at times? It may be because these are washed only once every two months.

Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha told the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour on Friday that while bed sheets, bedroll and pillow covers are washed every day, the blankets are washed every two months.

His reply came to questions raised by various members regarding the quality and hygiene of laundry and linen supplied by the railways on trains.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari quipped that the earlier system of passengers bringing their own linen and pillows for train journeys seems to be better.

He was supported by a Congress MP, who asked Mr. Sinha if this would be allowed.

In response, Mr. Sinha said it was a “good advice” and the railways will not have a problem if passengers want to adopt the earlier practice.

The Minister pointed out that while they have 41 mechanised laundries, plans are underway to increase their number by 25 more in the next two years so that these can serve about 85 per cent of the passengers who use railway linen and bed sheets.

Well we are an impoverished country by most standards with severe income disparity.
Having said that, cleanliness doesn't need a lot of money but a good national character. South India fairs much better than north in that regard.

I have heard that. South India is way cleaner.

That is very true. South Indians from my observation are industrious, honest, and hard-working. They are completely different from north or central Indians. Why is that?

Virtues are very subjective brother. Higher literacy is a big reason. North India (and Pakistan) has been one of the most turbulent regions in terms of constant wars in the last 200-300 years. What follows wars mostly here is bad administration, a big reason why India and Pakistan have so far not been able to solve most basic problems.

There is a concept that developed in India, it's called frugal innovation. It essentially entails driving innovation within your constraints. It is a short-term approach, not at all aimed at achieving perfection in any way but to connect your problem to it's easiest solution. A lot of economists have praised that approach, I find that a lack of vision and the lack of a drive to achieve perfection is appalling.

South India had some great administrators to instill a drive to be literate. Guess that should be a big reason.

If you were to come to India, you would find north Indians to be a bit loud and aggresive ( much like their Pakistani counterparts) while south Indians are soft-spoken and not quick to anger, but then that's just my opinion.

It's a shame that south Indians are in a political union with north and central Indians. I think south Indians would do so much better by going it alone.

Well you need to spend some time knowing India and Indians to be able to assess that.

What do south Indians think? Are they frustrated at the lack of education and cleanliness of north and central Indians? Do south Indians sometimes wish they were independent?

I think India is modernising her railway system....
Let's wait and see.

I think India is talking about modernizing her railway system. India has been talking about it for more than 50 years. It's just talk.
