WASHINGTON: Indian consulates in the United States have said that the US citizens of Pakistani origin could no longer travel to India on the US passport. The naturalised US citizens who were born in Pakistan are being told that they must apply for Indian visa on Pakistani passport.
The Indian consulate in Chicago has said in response to a query of a US citizen of Pakistani origin about Indian visa that dual citizens of the US and Pakistan must apply with a valid Pakistani passport. As a naturalised US citizen, you maintain Pakistani citizenship, whether you are aware of it or not.
As a result of this decision of the Indian government, the US citizens of Pakistani origin will not be able to avail the US consular protection during their stay in India, which all US citizens are entitled to.
The response further said the processing of visa requests by Pakistani nationals as well as persons of Pakistani origin takes a minimum of six weeks. It can take longer as the matter is examined by the authorities concerned in India. The embassy/consulate will promptly convey the decision on their application to the applicant as soon as it is received from New Delhi. You are requested to be patient and not make enquiries in this regard by phone, email, personal visit, fax or letters, which, due to constraints, we will not be able to respond to. When contacted, the US State Department said they were not aware of it and would respond after getting the information from Indian authorities.
