India eyes big defence pact with Bangladesh during PM Hasina’s April visit

Bangladesh has tasted Chinese equipment for quite some time, now it's time for some Indian equipment.
It's always good to have brotherly relations with your neighbour by way for defence purchases.
You re a joker no doubt. Defense pact targeting whom? Our top potential foe is India herself.

Your potential foe could be India but not SHW's. The weapons India will sell to BD will be used to eliminate the Jamati elements who are opposed to AL. Her visit will inter alia discuss the preparation for next general elections in BD which is less than 2 years away. India would like Awami League to repeat the 2014 election performance. Not everything is written on the agenda. There are something between the lines also.

Election is not a factor or bench mark. We know these are farcical like India arranges in J&K and NE. Beyond Indian idiotic media, Jama'at is not a factor here. However Indian open interference in our affairs have given birth to JMB, HuJi, AQIS, etc. India could be underestimating BD people or even SHW.

Until Bangladesh is a secular democratic country it will not be hostile to india, but the day Bangladesh falls into the hands of the mullahs then hostility will start.
Extremist ideology and secularism are incompatible.

Neither India is in love with Bangladesh nor Awami League is in love with India. Both Awami League and India have one common interest. They both would like Awami League to be in power even if it requires to disallow BNP from contesting. India will use its diplomatic clout to ensure legitimacy of AL govt. in BD. You know how the old govts. were changed in Sri Lanka and Nepal and Maldives is in pipeline. Its not just in South Asia. China did it in Philippines and Russia influenced US elections. The only thing is that it is not done officially and both governments involved would rubbish any such claims.
BNP, Jamat and Jamatis are anti India so we would like to frustrate them to the hilt. The diplomats are not just there for processing visas and intelligence agencies aren't 100% working to counter the terrorists. National interests are not confined to national boundaries. Modi being an RSS man is having best of relations with Saudi Arabia that does not mean Hindus and Wahabis have become best of friends. We don't believe in emotional relationships and deep sweet friendships and dont trust anyone blindly. In 1971 when we intervened in Pakistan's internal matters, we ensured we entered a 20 yrs defense treaty with USSR.

What about India falling in the hands of hindu extremist? You already elected a hindu fundamentalist party into power, muslims are being killed for the rumor of eating beef.Thousands of muslims were burned to death in gujarat, babri masjid riot and other countless riot happened in india.Everyday hindu extremist are threatening to kill or drive out Bengali speaking muslim, threatening to capture part of Bangladesh. It is we who should be prepare to the possibility of a hostile, hindu fundamentalist india hellbent of attacking Bangladesh.

I am guessing India is desperate. The Government which has a ultra-nationalist image needs to show their countrymen that they can counter China in their own backyard. Thus they are most probably forcing it on Sheikh Hasina.

For Hasina It is a delicate matter. She doesn't consider India any threat but She can't risk irritating the Army which inherited the traditional outlook of Pakistan Army , which is an inherent dislike of India.

However, Army is happy with Hasina's govt as she is delivering the growth, modernization and expansion of the army which she can't stop as her Govt. is non-democratic and she needs the good will of the army.

So the most possible conclusion will be a loose defence understanding with India which will include training, exercises and procurement of not so delicate equipment such as logistics for Army or coast guard which won't disturb the top Army officials. Let us see how China takes it.

Plus Any deal signed with India, can be used against India too. Because Bangladesh can sign similar deals with China saying " we have done it with you" So India needs to be cautious here. Indian troops in Bengal isnt a huge deal, but chinese troops here certainly unsettle a huge number of people!!!!

Modi govt has been in power for 3 years and FYI the number of religious unrest has gone down. The worst unrest was under the congress rule, babri also happened under their rule, so I don't think India has become a Hindu fundamentalist society just yet.
As for cow protectionists, they are criminals who have killed not just Muslims but also low cast dalit Hindus, these individuals will be punished in due course.
And even if against all odds BJP abandons secularism then it will surely be defeated in the next elections.
If you compare the track record of India then I don't think it will derail from its secular tracks, the same cannot be said about Bangladesh.

India is already miles away from secular path. You have elected Hindu fundamentalist on power, they vigilantly pushing hindu agenda in all sphere of life. Many indian state,it is already illegal to eat beef, they are attacking young lovers in valentine days,They are attacking christian, low caste, tribal, they are giving citizenship selectively to hindus only but not muslim, moreover branding muslims as illegal to kill or drive out in convenient time.Muslims are severely discriminated in all jobs, they can't even rent house in hindu areas in many part of India. How much unsecular acts you need to believe india is not secular?Perhaps you are waiting to start genocide of minority people to finally shed your delusion of india being secular? That's the only thing left for India.
Just because you have put a word 'secular' in the constitution, you think all people will fall for this lie ignoring all these realities? Compared to this, our track records are much, much better in Bangladesh.

All this yacketi yak means nothing as long as our constitution ensures secularism. An individual in his personal capcity has freedom of choice. In his private capacity he can love or hate another citizen on any ground but can not act against the constitution. Let Modi or any other religious fundamentalist becomes Prime Minister as long as he upholds the constitution no one should have any problem. Democracy takes time to seep into the thinking of the people. It evolves over a period of time. Before raising fingers at India look at your own constitution.

Bangladesh shouldn't sign any of these defence MOU or Deal whatever they term it, with any party. Be it with India, China or anyone else. Our nonalign foreign policy demands of it. Be it with India, China or anyone else.

Aligning Bangladesh militarily with any of the polarities will be a major breach of the core value of Constitution. It's stated very clearly in the constitution that state should follow a path of nonalignment in foreign policy & keep an neutral position in course of an political/military conflict or polarisation.

Bangladesh doesn't invest in military just to defend itself, but also to ensure that we can maintain this neutrality or nonalign to the extent possible.
