India Donates USD 1 Mln to Palestinian Refugees

I am not against giving aids.. But before taking such steps..one needs to look at itself..
We are not like america where poverty is almost negligible..So if americans take such steps..it is justified...
Everyday i watch children begging on roads..And if MY Money is not utilised to provide eduction, home, food etc to that child i consider this as a WASTE!
Try to understand one thing mate.........

The govt. spends enormous amount of money on public welfare schemes.....This amount of money if utilized properly, would have already solved most of the problems of India.

BUT, we all know that, nomatter how much govt. spends on national welfare.....the benifit never reaches the lower strata of the population....because of rampant corruption.
The money gets looted before being utilized.......

So, nomatter what amount of money, the govt. allocates for national welfare.....hardly any of it is going to be used.

Therefore giving little money as international aid and increasing India's goodwill...will do India no harm. (so, people supporting such a move are not all anti-Indians....they have a reason too)

BUT, I also agree with your point that, all govt. spendings should come under scrutiny.

I pray the best for Palestinians and wish them well. I dont want anyone to misread my post BUT charity must start at home. There are children starving tonight on streets of India and i genuinely pray we could do all we can for these. Palestine have some extremely rich neighbors that ought to be ashamed that they are not doing more. Indian money should be utilized for indian souls. Why the heck is this happening. Please dont view my flags for a minute - Indian money for Indians first.

You are posting this crap for just 1 Mn $ ?? :woot:

India is far better than many countries including Pakistan. We also gave 2 Bn $ aid to A'than. We have certain allocation for social welfare. You don't need to care for that.

Tomorrow, you will say we should not invest 10,00,00 Mn $ = 100 Bn $ for defence ??? Mixing social welfare with other things. Everything has certain allocation but how come you understand when 17% are spent only on your defence and rest + aid on other work. We are investing more on social welfare compare with many countries. Do some research before posting.

Read post #31

and now tell me.....what is the solution??

keep on increasing funds for public welfare schemes.......OR to decrease corruption??

We keep increasing funds by starting new schemes every day.........but the money goes to foreign banks........AND poverty remains where it was. .

This has nothing to do with Pakistan or Afghanistan. Its ok for an Indian to say that they feel the $$ should be spent in India but when i say it then you go off topic. As i anticipated the personal attack i put in my post to not look at my flags and think what im posting. Instead you jump before reading. I am in no way being disrespecting your nation - quite the opposite. Where India spends their $$ is a matter for your appointed politicians. I know if i was a tax payer in India i would want to help Indians first.

Although I support Israel and not Palestine, So i think GoI taking wrong step. But anyway, I don't think 1 mn $ makes any difference. Hell, Even 1 Bn $ won't make any difference. We can afford that. You started posting crap with just 1 mn $. We can give 5 Bn $ aid and still are investing 20 Bn $ for social welfare every year and our problems are decreasing and whereas for others it's increasing. Anyway, It's our money, We give Aid or waste. What's your problem ?? Don't think for us. You are just doing trolling with zero value in your post.

Well this is the irony of our nation..we always do the opposite of what actually should have been done..I think such transactions too should be brought under the lookpal bill..although there are no signs of corruption related with this..But proper usage of funds in context of domestic requirement should be given attention.
I think instead of Lokpal bill it should be Election commission who should take note of these things....atlast they are trying to attract Muslim leaders by donating dollars

Note:-
1}I am not against donation but i am against donating money...i mean if you realy want to donate you can donate food items,Ambulances, medicines etc....it will help us in three ways

{a}they can't buy weapons from that......
{b}it will help us in saving foriegn exchange......
{c}it will help us in creating jobs[i know here amount is not big so it won't make a big differnce]...

2}I am against the timing of this donation....

I completely agree with u dude..

the gov is doing this for vote bank politics..with UP elections coming up(which has a huge muslim voters) they need to be seen as pro-muslim in international politics,,,but i would rather have them spent on our Indian muslims by building more schools or increasing public health care...even they can spend on increasing awareness among indian muslim population on getting their children vaccinated for polio(there are many conspiracy theories among illiterate muslims).. I feel this is waste of money coz we are not getting any thing from Palestine internationally or from any other Arab country any more than we get from now...

Israel must be feeling a sharp pain right between its shoulder blades.

Israel donates millions of dollars to palestine every year. Are you kidding me? You think donating just 1 million dollars is going to affect india-israel relations

Some people really have no information on Foreign Policy.

The 1 million USD contribution is to the UN agency. How the hell can that be used by terrorists or to arm Palestine against Israel? And it is the same agency where the US, EU and other countries are donating 100s of millions of dollars contributing half of the UNRWA budget. And contributions to UNRWA have going on since the 1990s. Even under the NDA govt. $ 1million contributions were made twice. And this was apart from scholarships and security training to Palestinian security forces.
The Vajpayee govt. also endorsed the creation of an independent Palestinian state in well defined borders

"Notwithstanding its friendly relations with Israel, Vajpayee asserted India's principled stand on Palestine and said, "We continue to champion the cause of the Arab world.""
India asserts support for Palestinian statehood | 2003

The Palestinian issue is an Arab issue and it is Indian national interests to take an even handed stance. And donating a million dollars to a UN agency can hardly be considered anti-Israel. When Israel itself was involved in setting up that agency.

Israel donates millions of dollars to palestine every year. Are you kidding me? You think donating just 1 million dollars is going to affect india-israel relations
Some people have very limited understanding. The US donates 300+ million dollars every year, how has that affected US-Israeli relations?

Infact, India is one of the few countries in the world where both Israel and Palestinians have very good relations and people to people relations as well. And this allows India to have leverage with both sides although we have chosen not to exercise it as much at present.

Infact, one of the key demands from Israel is that Palestinians open direct negotiations with them. And here is what E Ahamed, the Indian MoS of Foreign Affairs said on the event pretty much taking up the Israeli line. If you read between the lines, you would understand that Israel would have supported this line. And NO this was NOT vote bank politics either.

Israel and PA should opt for direct talks: Ahamed, IBN Live News
From Harinder Mishra Ramallah, Nov 19 (PTI) Expressing India's support to the Palestinian cause, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed today called upon Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) to opt for direct talks to resolve final status issues. "Our support for the Palestinian people has not just been limited to economic and humanitarian issues, but also in several other areas. "India was the first non-Arab state to recognise the Palestinian Liberation Organisation", Ahamed told young Palestinians assembled at the inauguration of a multi-purpose sports centre in Ramallah built by joint financial assistance from India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA). "The issue of Palestine has taken a decisive turn after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas applied for full membership at the United Nations. "Our Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed his steadfast support for the creation of an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital living side by side with Israel", the Indian minister said. He said India "believes that direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians is the only way to resolve final status issues." Peace talks between Israel and the PA has hit a roadblock with the Palestinian leadership demanding that the Jewish state first put a complete halt on building activities in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Meanwhile, the new sports centre consists of a 1000 square meter multipurpose sports hall comprising an indoor basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, tennis, and handball court, according to international standards. The facility will be also utilised for gymnastics as well as other sporting activities.

The Indo-Arab trade bloc continues to be the biggest trading bloc for India and is on par to deliver a $240Bn trade relation by 2014. India, Arab League trade may reach $240 bn by 2014: CII
. It was around $120Billion last year.
Most can probably be confirmed by google searches for foreign trade for years 2008-2009 and 2009-2010

* India's oil import bill has been around $80-90B. Assuming that 80% are coming from Arab countries or Iran, that's around $60B approximately which accounts for almost half of the two way trade.

* However, the non-oil component has been increasing at a much much faster rate particularly in areas of IT, Health, Pharmecuticals, and Education. The other top ticket items with billions of dollars worth of investment in the future are around Space exports, Infrastructure in India and Renewable energy (particularly solar, Gulf countries are pretty big onto this) Arab-Indian Conference discusses joint renewable energy, technology, infrastructure & SMB projects worth USD 21 billion | Al Bawaba

* Indo-Arab trade is heavily skewed at present towards the GCC countries. For example just non-oil trade with UAE last fiscal year was $50bn, expected to reach $96bn in five years. Incase you didnt know, total India UAE trade is at the top spot for last fiscal year ahead of India-China.

* Expats from GCC particularly Saudi Arabia followed by UAE were the biggest bloc of NRI remitting money back to India contributing about 32% of total remittances. More than North American which was at second place at 29%. Dollar amount was around $30bn

* According to Export Import Databank for the WANA (West Asia North Africa) region the split was almost $80bn in imports (mostly oil and oil based products) with $40bn exports. This also includes Israel by the way with around $4bn in two trade last year.

Not to mention the security aspect of our relationship particularly with the Gulf countries.

The Gulf region, Pradhan argues, is also of strategic importance for India for other reasons:

* India-GCC trade amounts to over USD 84 billion. The GCC countries are a lucrative market for Indian goods such as textiles, spices, other food products, electrical goods and machineries, and IT products.
* The Gulf region supplies around two-thirds of India’s total energy requirements.
* The Indian diaspora comprising around 5 million people: protecting the interests of Indian workers in the region has been an important area of focus in bilateral relations.
* India’s long-term energy security could be dependent on Iranian oil and gas reserves (Iran has the second and third largest proven gas and oil reserves respectively in the world). India’s trade with Iran amounted to USD 13.39 billion in 2009-2010. Possible future sectors of mutual investment include oil and gas, steel, fertilizers, infrastructure and railways. Iran is also significant in terms of providing India with an access route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, and for cooperation on maritime security.
* The GCC countries see India as an important partner in tackling terrorism in their respective regions; defence cooperation agreements have been signed with the UAE, Oman and Qatar.

Pradhan points out that India has established defence ties with several GCC states:

1. Oman: India and Oman signed a military protocol in 1972, which led to a three- year deputation of Indian Navy personnel to man Oman’s Navy in 1973. A MoU on defence cooperation was signed between India and Oman in 2005. Areas of cooperation include joint military exercises, military training and IT, educational courses and programmes, exchange of observers and formal visits. Currently, a two-tier arrangement for defence cooperation – Joint Military Cooperation Committee (JMCC) and Air Force-to-Air Force Staff Talks (AFST) - exists with Oman.
2. UAE: India signed a defence cooperation agreement with the UAE in 2003 that will focus bilateral cooperation on military training, cooperation in military medical services and jointly combating pollution caused by the military at sea. Regular naval exercises take place between India and the UAE.
3. Saudi Arabia: India and Saudi Arabia have not yet signed any agreement on defence cooperation, though the Delhi Declaration signed in 2006 forms the basis for security cooperation. Joint naval exercises in addition to joint exercises between the Indian Army and Royal Saudi Land Force are also being planned.
4. Iran: India-Iran relations have been shaped by political relations between the two countries as well as by the role of the United States in the region. India signed a MoU on defence cooperation with Iran in 2001. The New Delhi Declaration signed in 2003 laid further emphasis on defence cooperation in areas including training and mutual visits. The Declaration also laid focus on cooperation on sea-lane control and security, joint naval exercises, Indian assistance in upgrading Iran’s Russian-made defence systems and establishment of joint working groups on counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics. India’s vote against Iran at the IAEA in 2005 has hindered further strengthening of defence cooperation.
5. Qatar: India signed defence cooperation and security and law enforcement agreements with Qatar in 2008. These agreements focus on cooperation on issues including terrorism, piracy, maritime security, money laundering, narcotics and transnational crimes. These agreements are significant also because it gives the Indian Navy access to operate in the region to ensure security of sea lanes. Qatar has also participated in courses at the National Defence College (NDC) in India, and has expressed interest in participating in additional training courses.

On initiatives in strengthening cooperation between India and the Gulf countries, Pradhan notes that the Indian Navy has played a significant role in the form of “Naval Diplomacy”. As defined by the Indian Ministry of Defence, “Naval Diplomacy entails the use of naval forces in support of foreign policy objectives to build ‘bridges of friendship’ and strengthen international cooperation on one hand, and to signal capability and intent to deter potential adversaries on the other. The larger purpose of the Navy’s diplomatic role is to favorably shape the maritime environment in the furtherance of national interests, in consonance of the foreign policy and national security objectives.” Pradhan points out that naval cooperation is also a significant area of military-to-military cooperation in its capacity to secure SLOCs and build ties through maritime bonding. India has been very proactive in engaging with navies of the GCC countries in the form of joint exercises, port calls, goodwill visits to ports, and training programmes.

In his view, specific defence diplomacy initiatives taken to achieve Indian foreign policy objectives have included:

* Collaborating against piracy
* Safety of SLOC
* Securing choke points in the western Indian Ocean
* Dealing with China in the Indian Ocean
* Curtailing Pakistan’s influence in the Gulf
* Building security cooperation with GCC countries
* Strengthening India’s strategic interests in the Gulf region

One million USD for 5 million Palestinians. That means each refugee gets a whopping 20 Cents each. I hope they dont spend it all in one place. What a display of Indian generosity. I am speechless.
